Unknown: I know your secret
I look up. It's after dinner and everyone is talking and laughing. We're still outside.
I look at Jace, who is talking to Addison to make arrangements to get her home to her father.
Me: who the hell is this
Unknown: someone that knows about your son
"Jace!" I blurt.
He looks up, reads the look on my face, says something to Addison, and then walks over to me.
I'm going to cry.
"What's wrong?" he asks.
I show him my phone. His eyebrows furrow.
Me: who are you
Unknown: come behind the bush
I look at the bus that's away from everyone.
Jace and I exchange a look.
"What's wrong?" Dad asks me, worried.
"I'll go." Jace says.
He walks over to the bush and just stares.
"What is it?" I demand.
He looks at me with a panicked expression.
"Jace?" Addison asks. "What is it?"
Rikki takes my phone from my hands.
"You don't-"
Jace bends down and picks something up, and when he's standing up, my hand covers my mouth.
There, in his arms, is a baby boy with red hair that matches my own, and blue eyes that are brownish.
They're turning brown with his age.
I step back.
"Who's baby is that?" Mom gasps.
"Is this your sick way of telling Rylee and I that we have another sibling?" Adam gasps, disgusted.
"We don't hae any more kids." Dad says.
"Well I obviously haven't had sex." Adam says.
Everyone looks at me.
"Rylee?" Rikki asks slowly.
She passes around my phone.
"You had a baby?" Adam asks.
The kid starts to scream. Jace stands there with his arms extended and his hands under his arms, holding the kid awkwardly.
"Rylee!" Rikki says.
"I-I-" I stutter. "Yes!" I snap. "He's my baby! Marcus raped me! That's why I disappeared for ten months."
Silence.
"You gave the baby up for adoption?" Dad asks quietly.
"Yes, I did."
"Well he's not with his adopted parents." Mom says.
Jace sets the kid on the ground and steps away.
He doesn't know the first thing about children.
My phone beeps.
Unknown: I adopted him, but I don't want him anymore. you should take him. he's already under your name. don't ask how I changed it. He's unnamed. He doesn't calm down. He wants his mom
He's sitting there, screaming.
I feel...
Almost pain just to watch him cry.
But I can't.
"Well...do something!" Rikki says.
"I can't. I can't be a mother." I shake my head rapidly, tears rushing down my cheeks. "Not when his Dad is-"
"Marucs isn't his Dad." Adam blurts. "Jace is."
Everyone looks at him.
"What? We all know your getting married. It's not the kid's fault you were raped. It's Marcus's. Don't make him suffer. He's a baby. You don't need to be scared of a baby. Trust me." Adam says.
"If you don't go get him, you're going to regret it for the rest of your life." Dad whispers.
"We would know best." Mom adds.
I look at the screaming boy, and slowly, I walk over to him. I squat down and hesitantly pick him up.
It's the weirdest thing. The second my hand touches his arm, he stops crying and looks right into my eyes.
It's like he knows.
He knows I'm his Mom.
The pic on the side is of the baby, who isn't named yet. I already know what I want to name him, but fel free to suggest a name and I'll consider it :)
