The pic on the side is of Rylee's Mom
When I wake up the next day, the house is silent.
I get up and walk into the kitchen.
There's a note on the counter.
Ry,
Hey, everyone went to the beach. Jace is still here and so is Kaden.
-Nikki
I toss the note in the trash and walk into Kaden's room.
His crib is empty.
Where's my son? Nikki said he was here!
Panicked, I rush around the house, and then I peek into the room Jace is asleep in.
He's not asleep. He's sitting on the bed in sweatpants, feeding Jace some baby food.
He doesn't notice me standing there, but Jace and Kaden look so happy. Kaden is giggling and Jace is grinning from ear to ear.
I smile softly.
Slowly, I walk into sight.
When Jace sees me, his smile gets bigger.
I open my mouth to say hi, but I'm interrupted.
Only it's not by Jace.
"Dada!"
I gasp. He's never said his first word. He'll only make noises.
My hands cover my mouth and Jace looks like he doesn't know if he should be happy or upset.
Jace looks at me. "I-um-I'm sorry." He says. "I mean, I'm not his Dad..." he trails off slowly.
I drop my hands, grinning.
"Yes you are!" I climb on the bed with him. "He said his first word! That's good!"
"I'm his Dad?" he asks.
"Do you want to be his Dad?"
"Well...yes." He pauses. "But...I mean, we're not in a relationship...it would be a bit hard because I life across the country..."
"You live across the country now." I point out. "We're not in a relationship now."
Kaden lays down and shuts his eyes
"Right." He says.
We're silent for a long time, and then Kaden falls asleep, so I carry him to his crib, and then I walk back into the room.
I hesitate before I climb onto the bed with him.
I slide under the covers and roll over so I'm facing him. He does the same.
"I know all the really important things, but I want to know the other stuff." Jace whispers. The bedroom door is shut.
"Like what?" I ask.
"Like..." he trails off. "Your first love."
"Marcus." I say.
"Really?" he whispers. "Did you guys have sex...by choice?"
"Yes." I sigh. "We were together three years."
"Do you still care about him?"
"No. I hate him."
"Good." He says.
"What aout you? Who was your first love?"
He doesn't answer me, he just looks away.
"Jace?" I frown.
"You." he whispers.
"Me?" I ask, sitting up. "Really?"
He nods.
"Oh..." I trail off.
"How do you take your coffee?" he asks.
"Half black, a bit of French vanilla, milk, and two teaspoons of sugar."
He smiles. "Me too. What was your childhood obsession?"
"Demi Lovato." I say shyly.
"Aw! That's adorable. Mine was Aerosmith."
I lay back down next to him.
He goes on asking me questions, like my favorite color, an favorite food, and ring styles, and home style, my tampon brand, my favorite book, my first concert, my worst day protocol, my favorite scent, how I argue, everything.
"Now you have to tell me the juicy stuff."
"Like what?" I ask. We're not even thinking about what we're doing. I'm sitting on his chest with my fingers linked with his.
"Like...what song puts you in the mood?"
I blush wildly. It's embarrassing.
"You have to tell me." He says.
"Okay, okay!" I smile. "Believe it or not, it's I Melt by Rascal Flatts."
"Hmm." He says. "I'm playing it."
"Jace!" I laugh.
"I want to hear it." He defends. He shifts, putting his hand on my thigh while he pulls his phone from his pocket.
I watch him as he types away on his phone. He looks excited.
Suddenly, why I've missed him so much clicks in my head.
I'm in love with him.
I know I am. I can feel it.
The song starts to play, and I just watch him as he watches the video. He's smiling.
When the song ends, the room falls silent.
"Why are you staring at me?" he whispers.
I shake my head. "I don't know." I lie.
"I have two more questions." He whispers.
"Ask away." I whisper.
"One, are you a virgin by choice?"
"Yes." I say.
"But you've only had sex with Marcus?"
"Yes." I nod. "Are you?"
He looks away from me.
"Jace?"
"I had a one night stand in high school and it was sloppy and..." he trails off. "She's horrible in bed."
"So was Marcus." I mumble.
"And question two." He says. "What are your lingerie sizes?"
When I said that song puts me in the mood, I wasn't kidding.
"Why don't you find out?" I blurt, my cheeks turning pink the minute the words leave my lips.
He gulps, his eyes get huge, and something slowly rises beneath me until it's poking me in the butt.
"Rylee, I'm warning you-"
My body shoots forward and my lips lock with his.
Almost immediately, a groan escapes his lips, and the rest is history.
