Next day, Kinry's birthday.
Kinry's POV.
Today I finally turn six. Daddy always made my birthdays the best, but he always seemed upset. "Daddy's just planning a big surprise," he'd say as he'd wipe sweat from his forehead. But nothing big ever came up. I made sure to wake up early and head to daddy's room but stopped at his door. I heard quiet whimpering. "Did daddy ruin the surprise? Did he forget that I'm six? Was dessert going to be late again?" I'd wonder before heading back to my room. I always wonder. I got ready for the day, wearing my favorite blue shirt and sweatpants. I hope daddy will think I'm just as handsome as him. He bought me this outfit just for my birthday. Soon after, daddy comes into my room. I smile. "Sorry Kinry, daddy just woke up late," he smiled as he spoke. He lies. I only know he lies by his smile. He doesn't show his teeth but instead his lips spread very thin. His eyes don't smile, they stare blank at me, as if staring right through me. I just smile at him, "it's ok daddy." I always say. I continue to play with my toys. Daddy sighs and goes downstairs. I'm not sure what he does down there.
I continue to mind my own business until daddy calls me downstairs. "Your cake is ready, Kinry," he'd call, sounding exhausted which made me feel rushed. I skipped a few steps hopping down the stairs. When I got to the kitchen, the smell of chocolate filled my nose. I looked up at the table and saw a chocolate mini cake with six candles. He didn't forget! I smile and laugh before crawling onto the chair. "Make a wish," daddy chuckled. I made a wish and quickly blew out all six candles.
