Wet. All I could think was one simple word, "Wet." My vocabulary was still frustratingly small. I guess you can't really blame me, considering I was still in the womb.
A thick liquid invaded every crevice of my body, it wafted into my nostrils, ears, every pore was filled.
I forced myself to open my eyes, slowly, allowing the light to filter into my pupils, adjusting my vision and I took the world in through my eyes for the first time. Already knowing the impact, my heart raced as I realized this would only ever happen once.
The world blurred and spun in my vision, my infant eyes unable to comprehend what they should focus on. I... floated still waiting for my stomach to stop churning and my head to stop spinning.
A new sensation in my chest... hot and... painful! I instinctively took a deep breath, forcing the thick green-blue liquid deep into my lungs. It offered no salvation from the the dulling ache in my stomach and chest.
Distant and blurred beebs sounded from somewhere outside my "protective" bubble. Urgent, authoritative yelps from creatures outside my vision struck my ears like lightning. I had not yet acclimated my eyes or ears to anything but the green goop.
The ache in my chest was steadily growing, making my anxeity hit new records, I needed something, something I knew would be outside the goo. I panicked and began thrashing about, kicking and yelping with a new urgency. The tall, furless creatures gathered around my bubble and conversed, their faces distorted and tinted green.
"Help!" I cried out, "I need something!" I flailed, watching my paws scrape at the solidness of the bubble.
One furless nodded at another and he turned around, to a counter full of holographic images, scans and colorful buttons.
My world fell out from underneath me and I slipped away from my bubble, crashing to the "earth" beneath me. I inhaled, air, for the first time ever, the crisp new sensation of oxygen burned the deepest part of lungs. Whimpering, wet and cold, I gazed around unsurely, looking at the furless creatured move sticks around on pads of paper. Looking at me, nodding to another furless and then jotting something else down.
"Subject 239, codename: The Halo, steady vitals and responding normally," one furless spoke, then they left. All but one. She stood, gazing into my eyes, studying me even more closely than the others. After I laid shivering for several seconds, just maintaining eye contact with her, she put her paper down, reached for a towel and cautiously moved towards me. I lifted my muzzle up, shifted my weight and tried to stand, my limbs didn't quite cooperate and I simply rolled over, she smiled, bending down on one knee and placed the towel over me. She wrapped it around me the best she could and then lifted me to her chest. It was warm and cozy. I sniffed, inhaling the processed and unnatural way her coat smelled, the reached the way she smelled. Vanilla and lavender, with a soft hint of a natural Cedar.
A pinch to my left haunch and yelp from me. She pulled away a syringe and placed it back on the table.
"Now rest, sweet experiment. You can observe the world after a nice nap," she whispered while carrying me to the exit of the room. Gray walls and bright lights faded to black and I fell into unconsciousness yeah again.
