"Wow. Kid you are not bad," Josh commented. For some odd reason I suddenly felt like I was on some crappy singing contest that I used to watch in the UK.

"Thanks. I think," I accepted.

"She is the best we've had all evening," one of the twins said like it was no big deal. Jake and the other twin agreed. That was good.

"Okay," Jake started, "We are now just going to ask you some questions. To see how you would fit in with the band. Okay?"

"Yeah, ask away."

"Right first things first. You may have noticed there are twins in this band. How would you tell them apart?"

"Well, I don't know their names, but the one on the right has a slightly fatter face."

"Oh yeah the one on the left is Cameron and on the right is Ryan," I nodded.

"Is that my right or yours?"

"Yours," I nodded, "next question. Full name."

"Easy, Mary-Jayne Smith."

"Glad you found that one easy," Josh joked.

"So am I," I joked back.

"Okay, where are you from?"

"England, United Kingdom, Europe, Earth, Solar System, Milky Way, Universe."

"Got it. I thought you were. What are your favourite artists?"

"I would say You Me at Six, Paramore, All Time Low, We are the In Crowd for bands and Avril Lavigne and Pink for soloists. But saying that I am pretty open-minded for all music."

"Doing good kid," Ryan interrupted.

"Age?"

"Well, I'm 16 and a months."

"It is 10pm and we are still practising here. What would happen? I have to ask, you are a 16 year old girl that looks 12."

"Thanks,"I replied sarcastically, "I would stay until practise is over but then I would ask for a lift home. I wouldn't even dream of walking out there on my own at 10 at night."

"Wouldn't your 'rents mind?" Josh piped up.

A tear was brought to my eye. "My parents are dead."

"Oh I'm sorry," he said sincerely, "what about carer?"

"I refused one when I moved here. I was not going to lose any independence I had earned over the last 15 years just because of my parents and siblings murder."

"Isn't it like legally required?"

"No. It is advised, but not required." All of the boys looked shocked, "I'm 16, almost an adult. I am allowed to live on my own."

"Okay. If we were to get a contract and go on tour in the next year or so, how would you say we get past your age for education that you are required to get?"

"Do what child actors do, take it with me?"

"Okay that is it I think? Is there anything you would like to ask us?"

"Yeah, could you possibly not talk to me like I am a toddler still learning how to talk?" I put my thumbs up and gave a cheeky grin.

"We didn't mean to or realise that we were," Cameron butted in.

"I know. I just thought it would be a good thing to be brought to your attentions."

"Oh okay,"

"Um, I was just wondering how old are you guys?"

"The twins are 20, I'm 22 and Jake is 21," Josh answered.

"Okay now I do feel like a kid," I timidly commented.

"Don't, we act like a bunch of idiots most of the time so you will probably seem like the eldest if you get in?" Josh countered.

"What genre of music do you do?"

"Well, we would like to do heavy metal, but everything seems to end up quite pop punk-ish," I nodded, "do you have any others?" I shook my head violently, "well you should hear from us tomorrow. If you just write down your contact details here," pointing to a piece of paper, "and we will let you know."

"Okay, thank you for giving me a chance," I said confidently whilst writing down my mobile number which I had now learnt off by heart.

"How far away from here do you live?" Josh asked.

"Oh, about a thirty minute walk from here."

"I'll give you a lift. It ain't safe out there for any girl walking on their own."

"And it is to get in a car with a man 6 years older than me that I barely even know."

"Look do you want a lift or not?" He snapped. I timidly nodded. He led the way to his car.

"So where do you live kid?"

"Up by Palm Springs High School."

"Okay," he said pulling out onto the empty road. "How long since your parents passed away?"

"They were killed this May."

"Only that long ago. You said something about siblings as well."

"Yeah, I am technically one of six and the sole survivor of a murder of seven people in my house. The police have assumed the killer either was out to hurt me or didn't know I was in the house," by this point my eyes were prickling with tears and my hand was holding onto my necklace.

"I am so sorry."

"Don't be you didn't even know who I was or that it had happened. Just promise not to let the school know. I moved so that I would have sympathetic teachers not pushing me to do the best I can to do. Which is what I need."

"Okay Kid. If it is not personal can I ask what is with the necklace?"

"I was kinda expecting someone to asked since I moved here. No one has yet. Except you."

"Really?"

"Yeah. I mean everyone loves to ask me about England and stuff but never the small details on who I am."

"Wow I imagine it gets annoying."

"Not as annoying as one might think. The morons seem to be happy with the shit I feed them. Any way the necklace has my mother's, father's three brothers' and two sisters' ashes in the glass."

"Why would you want that around your neck?"

"I was very close to my family. No one wanted to be my friend so I bonded with my family instead. This way they are always close to my heart."

"Oh. You didn't have any friends. I thought a pretty girl like you would have people at you feet begging to be your friend."

"I am odd in personality. I have peculiar habits like randomly singing words of my favourite song. Or eating the most gross looking sandwich ever and saying it tastes good. I used to have friends before they decided they could no longer be bothered with me. And here I still have no friends because I am a laughing stock."

"How the hell are you a laughing stock?" He asked pulling into the street I lived in.

"I got asked when the civil war was and I said 1642 between King Charles and parliament. Everyone has laughed at me since. I live over by the corner shop."

"Okay. So how does that makes you a laughing stock. I bet they would make the same mistake in England."

"Because I am different here any way. Thanks for the lift, night Josh."

"Night Jayne."
