Tide, Terra, Noctiflora, and Topaz were sitting in the same field of flowers as Tide had come to during their first week, laughing and Lilly playing in the dandelions, when a Seawing came in holding a scroll. She walks over to Tide and hands them the scroll.

Tide unfurls it and reads.

To: The Seawing animus.

I have bad news. The plague that tormented us the year your father died has returned. Thousands of Seawings have fallen ill and we can foresee no end to this torture. I was hoping you would be able to use your power to help us.
Also, the relationship with the Skywings is growing tense. We will need your support to settle them.
I am still not a hundred percent sure whether you need to come, but expect a letter within the next few days.
With my next letter, a guide will arrive to escort you to the Deep Palace.

-Queen Piper of the Seawings.

Tide looked up at their friends, who were looking curiously back. This was terrifying. The Queen, who didn't even know their name, wanted to bring them home to the Sea Kingdom and... abuse their magic.

Tide didn't want to go... But she was their Queen. If they refuse, she could not only banish them from the Sea Kingdom, but also forbid them to remain at the Academy. And then I would really lose my friends, forever.

"Tide? What's wrong?" Topaz said.

"Are you alright?" Nocti asked.

Tide handed the letter over to their friends. "The Queen wants me to return to the Sea Kingdom. To use my magic." They said it calmly, but their heart was pounding painfully, frantically trying to escape their ribcage, like a kookaburra in a pet shop.

"Let's not panic yet," Terra said, the most reasonable and kind one of them all. "We can figure everything out tomorrow, when the next letter arrives."

Tide nodded. "You're right." They wrapped their wings- awkwardly- around Topaz, Nocti, Terra, and little Lilly. "Hey. Maybe it's a false alarm. It's getting late. Let's go sleep, and we can worry about it in the morning.

Despite their reassuring words, they knew what the letter would say.
