In the darkness of the cold, cruel night, only the strike of lightning became their source of light. Waves crashed into each other like predators fighting over prey. The storm grew stronger and stronger and it was getting too difficult to swim through the brine. Thunder clapped and lightning shrieked. It became harder to breathe, harder to see.

Aevri fought for air and paddled as strong as she could to get her little brother to the rescue boat. "Help her up! Help her up!", someone shouted. The man's voice sounded familiar.

It was her dad.

"Help her please!".

But as as soon as the people on the boat got her brother on board, she dived back to the deep blue sea to look for the rest of her family. She was horrified, because she was the only one in her family who knew how to swim. She swam as hard as she could. She searched as long as she could fight back the waves.

"HELP!" people cried.

"SAVE US!"

"Aevri!", and there it was.

The sound was distant, but Aevri heard it loud and clear. She knew the voice all too well. She knew who it was coming from.

"Mom???", she answered.

She turned around to see her mother and her sister hanging on to a broken raft just a short distance away. She felt a sudden rush inside her and swam to their direction as hard as she could.

"Aevri! No! Save yourself!", screamed her sister. She tried her hardest to swim faster.

"Aevri! No!"

"Look out!"

Aevri put all her strength to swim and get to them, but as she came back up for air, before her very eyes, a huge wave sunk them. The current started pulling her away. She tried to swim back above water, she thought she had to save them. She just had to. She tried breathing the slightest of air she could when her head rose back up, but instead she ended up swallowing a whole lot of salt water.

Crushed by the waves, Aevri started to feel numb. Her eyes started to fail her, but in a blurr she saw the great big cruise she was just on a couple of minutes ago. Where she was enjoying a special vacation she had with her family. That memory seemed like an entire  lifetime ago.

Deep inside, Aevri felt this was the end of the line for her. That this was how it was all going to end.

Call it luck or a miracle or whatever you wanna call it, but seconds later, even with the numbness starting to come over Aevri, she felt a hand hold on to her wrist tightly and pull her back above water.

"Stay with me," a guy said.

"Stay with me."

Aevri forced her eyes to see who her miraculous saviour was. But all she saw clearly were a pair of wonderful emerald eyes. He seemed as if he was just her age.

"Over here!" the guy shouted. He didn't sound american.

She was tucked closely to him. His one arm wrapped securely around her waist. The next thing she knew, she was being pulled up the rescue boat. The guy who rescued her was suddenly next to her trying to bring her back to consciousness. She was too weak.

"That's my daughter! Let me through!" she heard her father shout. She tried desperately to open her eyes, but she couldn't. What she could only remember seeing near her were those same emerald eyes and that was it.

Then everything went black.
