3 YEARS LATER

[Aevri's POV]

"Aevri.. Aevri! Get up! Get up!! Dad made breakfast!! Come on!!," Terrance screamed, jumping up and down my bed. I slowly peeked from under my batman fleece blanket and suddenly felt the warmth of the sun streaming from the wide opened window. I looked at the clock on my bedside table.. It was just 6 in the morning. That's odd. Dad's usually supposed to be heading to work by now, leaving me to do breakfast for Terrance. He doesn't usually cook too. Well, not anymore.

Terrance hopped off my bed and ran down the stairs rapidly, still shouting, "Dad I woke her up already!! She's up! She's up!" He may be completely annoying and ridiculous most of the time, but he was still an awesome little brother. He never has breakfast without me and does everything he has to do just to wake me up, just to get me out of bed and join him for breakfast. I loved it like that.

                                                                                                 # # #

I came running down the stairs with my hair dripping wet after i made a quick shower, my satchel already with me. I was busy trying to towel dry my hair that i didnt mind going down the stairs quickly without holding on the stair railing. As I stomped on the last staircase.. SNAP! The wood snapped and my left foot went through it, leaving little scratches on my ankle as i pulled it back up. The scratches did sting though. Dad just stared at me and smiled as if nothing happened. I rolled my eyes at him and got back up and went inside the dining room slash kitchen. Terrance was already on his seat munching on his sunny side up and wonderfully cooked bacon. He just drank his milk from the looks of that white creamy mustache he's got right by his upper lip. I couldn't help but smile at the sight.

"Seriously dad. This house is falling apart. I know youre busy with work, but i could fix it by myself you know. It's not like you didnt teach me how to do all those house work stuff when i was kid. I'm not 10 anymore, I can actually look out for myself. I know you said you'd fix it all on your own, but come on. You gotta let me help somehow. The stairs at least? Before someone else gets hurt?", my dad completely waved me off, all his attention on what he was cooking, and just shrugged and continued whistling a happy tune that sorta sounded familiar. I sighed loudly to make him look but he didnt give in. I rolled my eyes at him again and noticed as i stared at what  he had on. He was wearing his old night robe again. The one Terrance and I bought for him for Father's day 3 years ago, just before the cruise vacation. I hated it when he wore it around the house with Terrance around because it reminded us both of mom. She was the one who picked it out for us. And Terrance and I bought it with our allowance money. I held back the memories the robe brought. That was an entirely different lifetime ago..

"Come on, darling. Stop whining and start eating. It's a beautiful day out and you'll need the energy for school today," said dad. He smiled at me and put my food neatly on a plate and put it on the table. I pulled out a chair right across Terrance and started munching on dad's well cooked ham, bacon and eggs. The only food he says he knows how to cook. But I know it's a little lie he says only to avoid having Terrance demand for a fabulously expensive main course.

"what's the occasion?" i asked, my mouth full of food. "Nothing. Why? Can't a dad cook for his children once in a while now?" he replied,Terrance chuckled. My dad turned to me and added, "Oh and don't talk when your mouth is full, sweetheart. It's Unlady-like." Terrance laughed like a retarded seal again. I made faces at him, which just made him laugh even more. He's exactly like those little kids you see in movies that are impossible to annoy.

PEEP PEEP!

"The bus is here!", Terrance shouted, bits of food spilling all over the table from his mouth. He jumped off his chair, ran back to the living room and took his bag. "Bye dad," he ran up to him and gave him a hug and kissed his cheek. "Bye Aevri," he gave one big warm hug and a kiss. That always felt refreshing. "See you guys later!," he shouted back as he made his was out the back door. Sigh. i dont know what me and my dad would do without him. Terrance had a way of bringing back life in the house the way dad and i never could.

"Dad?" I looked at him as his eyes met mine. I knew him all too well. "What are you really still doing home? You're usually out to work by now. Did something happen? Is something wrong?" I asked him with the calmest voice i could possibly let out. For a moment, he seemed like he didn't want to tell me what the matter was. But he gave in anyway. "I lost my job yesterday." His voice sounded tough but i knew, the way he grit his teeth, that he was in no such state. i stood up and walked over to him. Wrapping my arms around him the way he used to do to me when i felt awful. I felt his warm embrace hug me back as I sunk into his chest. I breathed in deep before looking up at him again and seeing the expression in his eyes. He tried so hard to hide it, but i knew how sad he was. "We'll get through this dad. Everything's gonna be okay. You'll find another job and  maybe i can find one too that doesnt recquire full time and we'll be fine. Okay?" i didn't like seeing him like this, feeling pathetic as if he hasn't already done enough for me and T. "You don't.. you don't need to work Aevri. That's not your responsibility. That's not your priority, it's mine. And I will find another job I promise you that. " I loved how he was usually so optimistic. I guess that's where Terrance gets it from too. I'm never the one to be positive, for others yes, but not for myself.

PEEP PEEP!

My bus was here. Dad gave me one last assuring look and kissed my forehead. "Go. You'll be late for school. I'll look around the city for jobs today and i'll call you if i find one. Okay?" I couldn't seem to say anything while holding back the urge to hug him and cry coz i felt helpless. So i just nodded and grabbed my satchel. "take Care Dad," I kissed his cheek before heading for the door. Before I could go out, he called back, "Aevri?" I turned around, "Don't go looking for a job behind my back, okay? I want you to focus on DAMA. I want you to focus on your dreams. You got that?" I nodded and headed off. I wanted to help him and there he was not allowing me to. As always.

I'm 18 and I'm supposed to be working somewhere to help pay the bills with my dad. But no. Instead, dad used part of the money we had left on sending me to the Drama Arts and Music Academy to 'live my dream.'  A dream I shared with him and mom when I was younger. I wanted to attend the school because I wanted to be a singer and composer when I grew up. But that was then. That was when everything was perfect. It seemed and felt like it was from an entirely different life.
