Chapter 1: Mind Reader.
Change. We all have to deal with change. Sometimes we aren’t ready. This was one of those times. Within the first day 3,000 people died. By the end of the week, 20,000 people were either dead or seriously injured. Some people are on the front line fighting, defending their homes, their country, even the world. And me? I’m cowering under a table, from only one of the millions of enemies that are out there.
Those people are heroes. I am Anabella Rose Keyla. I was Anabella Rose Keyla, year 9 student at Ivy Secondary College. Now I’m Anabella Rose Keyla, the girl hiding under the table trembling. What am I hiding from? Think Alien mixed with zombies. Blue aliens with the power to turn you into one of their own. The aliens are blue, slightly taller, breathe oxygen, with ease I might add, they run faster, their stronger, and they dress in clothes from their; and our own planet.
We separate them in two groups. Trixia and Trixianarian. The Trixianarian are the original aliens. Fast, beautiful, strong, intelligent and possibly born with super powers. They have beautiful white patterns tracing their faces and possibly their entire body. They have the ability to turn humans into Trixia. The Trixia are what we call the humans who have been turned, they look much the same, but tend to wear clothes from earth and have a variety of hair colours. The Trixianarians only have black or white hair.
The one I’m currently hiding from is intensely beautiful. He has beautiful black hair that falls across one of his eyes. He has the most beautiful pattern I have ever seen. A white triangle like shape stretched across his face in a curve, from his forehead to the bottom of his cheek. Dots follow the line on the side closest to his eyes. The thick end of the triangle like shape is at his forehead. For a moment I thought he was Trixia, he was wearing dark blue jeans and a black shirt. On closer inspection, which I was doing from my hiding place, I noticed a bracelet on his left arm. It was a blackish material that couldn’t possibly be from earth, it seemed to be woven in a way that resembled a braid; only more sophisticated.
While I was marvelling over his bracelet he somehow slipped away from my vision. It wasn’t until I heard a steady rhythmic breathing sound behind me did I realise not only did he know where I was, he was right behind me, under the table with me. I slowly turned around. His beauty temporally stunned me and I forgot that he had the ability to kill me and turn me into a Trixia in a matter of seconds. When my brain kicked in I went to scream. “Shhh Meuhu”
(Shhh human) it says covering my mouth. An expression of shock, recognition and lastly irritation play across the creatures face. I try to decipher what it just said. I assume that ‘Shhh’ was just that. Essentially telling me to shut up. “Meuhu” It continues in an irritated voice “ex evihava msuigreah” (Human, I am male).
No alien movie had prepared me for how beautiful their language would sound. Or how his voice seem to flow of his tongue in a sweet yet powerful way.
Suddenly its head snaps around to face the door. It pulls me deeper under the table and keeps one hand over my mouth, and the other one on my shoulder, as if holding me in place. And I’ll be the first to say, thank the gods he did, otherwise I probably would have got myself shot. Five Trixianarians walk in the building. All wearing what we assume are their native clothing. All holding gun like weapons. The tallest of the group speaks first “Hewer ov ethu Vaena”. (Where is the defective?)
I hear a jaw clench and the grinding of teeth behind me. Anger seemed to poor off the beautiful alien from earlier. Rolling off him in waves as his body tenses. I know I shouldn’t have noticed; -not that it stopped me from noticing- the fact that his arm was pretty muscular for someone of his body shape.
“Ex huit jik kio uv erhe” (I know he came in here) another one of the aliens speak.
“Osleit gre” (forget him) the first speaker appears to say to the entire party. Four of them walk out, whereas the first gives the room a quick glance over before leaving. After what felt like an eternity, but in reality was only 10 minutes the beautiful alien lets go of my mouth and shoulder. He rolls off of me and faces me. I stare, letting my eyes travel alone the patterns that trace his arms and face. I called it a he, again. I have no solid evidence it is truly a boy. The alien rolls his eyes. “Meuhu, tuhy hivita fissa!” (Human, you are annoying!).
I stare at him blankly. “Yea, so alien guy, I can’t understand a word you’re saying”. I know, I’m awful, but someone had to tell him. I’m human, I don’t speak alien. “Meuhu you may be, but I can speak your language so it isn’t a problem” (Human) he speaks it calm, with ease, and I’m beginning to think there isn’t a single thing an alien can’t do. “Meuhu” he laughs (human) “we can do wrong, we just prefer that no meuhu ever figures that out”.
I have got to be insane. I am talking to an alien, why hiding under a table. Time to play questionnaire! “So alien, what just happened?” I ask, I’m not going to lie, I am completely confused about the entire situation. “Meuhu” it begins “I don’t know how to explain that to you” it sighs “Meuhu, could you please stop referring to me as it?” at first I was completely confused, then something clicked. “Are you reading my mind?” I demand.
The alien sighs “Yes, Meuhu, I was reading your mind” he stands there and waits for my reaction “What on earth made you think you could read my mind?!” I shout.
“Meuhu, technically it was you” he says as if that explains everything.
“Me?” I question. How could I have made him think he was allowed to read my mind? Again the alien answers my mind “Not allowed as such” he begins “more that I have the ability, as far as I’m aware it only works on you, and I have to be looking directly at you or into your eyes…”
“Ok, so you can read minds if you can see me… I’ll just stand behind you all the time”
“If you wish Meuhu” he says, sounding cool and collected.
“Alien what does Mehu mean?” I query. “Meuhu” he corrects “and you can ask questions later, we should get out of here”
“What on earth makes you think I’m following you out of here?”
“Meuhu please don’t be difficult we must leave before they come back, if I wanted you dead, you would. Before you say anything, no questions until I say”
“Fine” I grumble.
Within half an hour I found myself following the alien through the bush. He seemed to know it better than I did, and that damaged my pride a little. An alien knowing my country, my home, better than I did. It made me realise how little attention I paid to the outside world. Getting caught up in my little world. I recon if the aliens didn’t come to take over our world, our own technology would of. Turning our brains into nothing more than a gloopy mess of mush and slush. It was these thought that where running through my mind when he spoke. “Meuhu, could you please pay attention to where you’re going? And perhaps walk a little faster?”
I stare blankly at him for a little. “Why?” I ask simply.
“Meuhu the creatures you call snails would probably make more progress than you”
“Just because I don’t have super alien speed doesn’t mean I’m snail pace” I retort.
“Super alien speed?” he questions before giving a wicked smile “that is a great idea Meuhu”. Why I was still pondering on what on earth he meant, he scooped me up in his arms and started running. I mean, I call it running but it was more of a blur. A racing blur. He had to be going faster than a car! It was terrifying. What if he hit a tree or something at this speed? He might survive but my fragile human body would be crushed. Laughter rumbles through him “Meuhu, you have such little faith. What makes you think I would crash?”
“Oh I wonder!” I state with heavy sarcasm “Maybe the fact your probably breaking ever speed law in the country?!”
He laughs. “Meuhu, your laws are irrelevant now, besides they’re only relevant to cars, and modes of transport, I am not a mode of transport”.
I start feeling sick and notice that as he is running his arms are almost rocking.
“Hey Alien, I think you’re going to make me sick if you keep rocking your arms like that”.
Laughter rumbles through him again. “Alright Meuhu, I’ll try as hard as I can to move less, if you try hard not to throw up on me”.
“You betcha alien freak”
“Betcha?” He questions, a look of confusion clouding his beautiful features.
“It means ‘you bet’” I inform him biting back laughter, and fighting the urge to roll my eyes.
“Meuhu, you humans are strange”
“Two ways aliens”
“What does that mean”
“Two ways; it goes both ways. Meaning you think I’m strange but I think you are equally as strange”
“That is a lot for two words Meuhu”
“Speaking of that word I totally will butcher if I try to say it, what does it mean?”
“It means human, meuhu”
“So you just said, it means human, human?”
“I suppose I did”.
The white marks on his skins start glowing.
“Why are you glowing Alien?”
He gives an uncomfortable laugh “Maybe another day Meuhu” he tells me. I frown.
“Alien that is so unfair”.
“Patients Meuhu” he tries to sooth.
I snorted in annoyance. “You’re kidding right?”
He laughed “No, Meuhu, I am not”.
I officially claim that alien to be evil. Even if he hasn’t tried to shoot me yet. Especially since he has been calling me human this whole time.
“Hey alien, my name isn’t human”
“Nor is mine Alien, Meuhu”
“My name is Anabella” I state coldly.
“Mine is far too difficult for you to ever pronounce” he says just as coldly putting me down.
“Try me”
“Valentroxagihuytio”
“Did they throw a bunch of letter noodles on the floor to get that?” I ask.
“Just call me Val, Meuhu” He says, obviously annoyed. But I wasn’t stopping there.
“Isn’t Val a girl name?”
He pulls a gun from his pocket. Pointing it at my head.
“I don’t have to keep you alive Meuhu” He says, his white patterns glowing again.
“Alright, alright. I’m sorry. It’s a lovely name alien”.
He sighs and puts the gun away. “Come on Meuhu, we should find a place to hide”
I laugh. I didn’t mean to be rude. “No offence alien boy, but don’t you think I should lead? You know seeing as I know all the hiding holes? There not all marked on maps you know, I have lived here all my life.”
He seems to consider it for a moment. “It would appear your right Meuhu, where do you think we should go?”
“Ooh, ooh!” I had to stop myself from jumping up and down –I can be a bit of an idiot that way- “I have an idea; we can go to the hidden valley, behind my house, in the little forest!” excitement laced my voice. I can be a little childish sometimes. Makes me think everyone should wear a little bracelet with five settings. Devil, for when you’re mad; Angel, for when you’re happy; Childish, when you want to be treated like a kid; Mature, when you want to be treated like an adult; and broken, for when there is simply no mode to explain your current feelings, or emotions. In theory it’s a great idea, in reality, you would probably get picked on for wearing it.
I soft laughter interrupts my thoughts.
“You sure have an imagination on you Meuhu”.
The damn alien was laughing at me again. I swear I was going to kill him.
“You with what weapon meuhu?” he questions.
I pull the gun from his jean pocket. “Yours” I answer.
“You’re kidding right?” worry edges into his voice. I hand the gun back to him.
“Yea, I am. Don’t freak alien boy”
“Meuhu, I swear I’m going to start calling you human girl”.
“Well you call me human, seems close enough to me”.
“I suppose you right, so where is your meadow?”
“I can’t show you if you don’t put me down”.
“Yes you can. Think about the whole way there”
“So you’re going to look at my memories and use them as a map?”
“Essentially”.
I close my eyes deciding to work with the alien freak just this once. For now. I mean he has only threatened to shoot me once right? You get worse than that from people in school yards.
“Meuhu, you’re getting distracted” amusement laces his voice.
“Oh right”.
I go back to picturing the way to my house, the forest behind it and the hidden pathway that leads to, you guessed it, a hidden meadow. It’s very, well hidden.
