PERSPECTIVE

I think I lost my $261,000 Chanel bag yesterday—either at the mall, the park, or the dental clinic. Honestly, I'm not sure.

The carelessness was probably because tomorrow I'm sealing a deal with one of the top companies in the world.

WestWorld.

Owned by one of my best friend's family friend.

She had suggested we sign the papers casually, without all the formalities, but I didn't need that. Not anymore. I didn't want anything handed to me just because we were friends. I wanted the  CEO to say yes because of my ideas, my hard work, and my accomplishments.

"Bestie!" Hailey's voice was loud enough to turn heads. I shook my head at her, then met her gaze. Her golden eyes were sparkling, and her grin outshone every light around us. She kissed my cheek and whispered how "gorgeous" I looked tonight.

I smiled, turned forward, and struck a pose for the cameras, my confidence radiating. Hailey stood beside me in a stunning green gown, looking flawless as always.

"I hate them so much!" she muttered, her voice barely audible. I leaned in and whispered back, "Me too. They're so damn loud." We both fake-laughed for the cameras, making it seem like we were genuinely sharing a private joke.

My manager waved us to move along, and we made our way to our assigned table. We were at an awards show, and guess what? I was nominated for the Women's Leadership Award.

"Boo! No alcohol here? I regret coming!" Hailey huffed, scanning the food area for something she'd actually eat. She was always so picky about food, dresses, and boys.

"Don't worry. If I win tonight, dinner's on me," I said with a grin. "My treat."

"Oh my god, yes! Of course, you'll win. You know what that means I'll get wasted tonight!" She laughed, her eyes twinkling. I rolled my eyes, grabbing her arm to pull her toward our table, where most people had already seated, waiting for the host to start.

About 10 minutes later, the show kicked off. Hailey won the award she was nominated for and, gave me a shout-out, making people stare at me. I was used to it by now, so I shrugged it off.

Fast forward to the part I was waiting for—my turn.

"And the award for Women's Leadership 20XX goes to... Violette Chrysalis!" The room erupted in applause.

I fucking knew it.

I hadn't worked my ass off to not win an award I'd dreamed of my entire life.

I smiled and made my way to the stage, taking the award from the host and greeting them with a polite nod. Now, for my speech. You might think I'd need a pep talk, but no.

Confidence flowed through my veins, just like blood.

The old me could never.

My hair fell into my face, and I tucked it back, almost shyly.

"Oh my god! Thank you so much for this. It's such an honor to receive the Women's Leadership Award. Being a woman in this industry, I've had to deal with so many sexist attitudes, and it always pissed me off to see that mentality. But honestly, holding this award in my hands now, I could care less about all of them."

The crowd smiled and nodded, encouraging me to keep going. But just as I was about to continue, my eyes locked with someone I hadn't seen in six years—and never wanted to again.
