Chapter 12

Doctor Lezeas' POV

I am a doctor and I don't like the idea of giving up on my patients as it is my duty to let things happen and do my best to assist in a health issue.

The health and well-being of my patients is in my hands. That is exactly why I help to prevent, diagnose, treat and cure illness, injury and diseases as general practitioners, and as doctors who practise in specialities such as surgery, psychiatry, cardiology, pathology, and public health.

Medicine is a caring profession, which provides great satisfaction to those who enjoy understanding and helping people.

With Mia her spinal cord had been crushed somewhat and it is bad I have to say because her body will not be able to move. The paralysis is due to damage of the spinal cord which loses the ability to send and receive messages from the brain to the body's system that controls sensory, motor, and autonomic function. Recovery is possible for her but we have to act fast so I've decided to have a talk with the family and let them sign some papers so we can proceed with the treatment.

I walked in the hall and stop at the waiting area and asked the family to accompany in my office to discuss matters. I closed the doors behind me and asked them to take a seat.

“Hello again. I've called you in here so we could discuss this matter further. As we've all know by now that Mia was shot in the spine as shown on the xray here.” I lifted it so it could be visible.
“As you can see these are the little shell fragments and here is where it is visible that the spinal cord is somewhat crushed.”

They nod their head signifying that they understood.

“So Doctor what you're trying to say is that the injury to the spinal cord is what cause the paralysis right?” asked the new guy present with the family.

“Exactly. The spinal cord is now damaged and it is unable to relay to messages to the brain and the other parts of the body. As I said before recovery is possible and I don't give up on my patients so I'd say there is a 50-50% chance that her spinal cord will work again. To make this happen Mia has to be treated quickly. There are different treatments like stem cell treatment, peripheral nerve re-routing, spinal cord regeneration and radiation combined with microsurgery. These are all slow progression with the spinal cord but there are good for survival of spinal cord injuried patients.”

They looked at each other then the older guy supposedly Juan look up and sigh, “What treatment do you think is the best? Whatever it is do what you can. Money is not an option doctor. Bring back Mami...I mean Mia to her usual self.”

“The best is radiation combined with microsurgery. The radiation therapy  destroys the harmful cells, while the microsurgery removes the excess fluid that contributes to the swelling. The goal is to allow the body to repair the injured cord resulting in permanent recovery after the accident.”

“We'll fill out the forms,” they said in unison.

I nod and handed the form to them to be completed and collect it after. I called the surgeons and finalize everything. Mia will be treated at once now that the bullet is removed.
