Alissa's POVMy alarm ringing loudly in my ears, the bright morning sun bouncing off the walls, my bare room, my suitcase in the corner. All things I take in as I wake. Sighing I reach over, unplug my phone from its charger and turn off my alarm. Setting my phone next to me again I rub my hands over my face to try and rub away the sleep. Taking in a deep breath I fling my blanket off my body and stand up from my bed.
As I walk into my bathroom I take in my disgruntled appearance, I reach over and grab my bag with my hairbrush, tooth brush and tooth paste. Taking out my hairbrush I carefully brush through my wavy reddish brown hair and follow up by brushing my teeth. Placing everything back in the small bag, I turn off the bathroom light, grab the bag and walk over to my suitcase. Placing my suitcase flat on the ground, unzipping it, placing the small toiletry bag on top and zipping the suitcase back up. Before I can place the suitcase upright again I hear my phone on the bed ringing. Standing up I walk over to my bed and grab my phone, looking at the screen it signals Ryan is calling. Smiling I answer the phone.
"Hey there Bergara" I say, turning back and walking towards my suitcase to set it upright.
"Hey lizard how you feeling?" He asks, throwing in my long standing nickname.
"I'm good, I'm a little nervous to be moving but mostly excited. I'm excited to be closer to you and Marielle and to just start over." I say thinking about how nervous I really am about moving out of Brookings Oregon. The only time I have ever left was for college at Chapman University in California where I met Ryan and we almost instantly became friends after having a journalism class together.
"Yeah, I get that. We were happy you're coming to stay with us for a while and I'm happy you're getting that fresh start Alissa." Ryan says honestly then he continues, "I was actually calling to let you know that Marielle and I are about an hour out with the moving truck."
"I really appreciate you guys for letting me stay with you until I get on my feet and okay, I'm all packed just let me know when you get here." I say. We finish up the conversation with "okays" and "see you soons". I set down my phone and take another look at all my packed up belongings. I honestly didn't own much. My life packed up into two suitcases , a backpack, and soon a gray plastic bin. Walking into my empty closet I grab the bin and set it on the floor next to my bed. I start undressing the bed, folding my sheet, blankets. Throwing them into the bin along with my pillow. Placing the lid on the bin I grab my phone and laptop chargers out of their spot plugged into the wall and put them in my backpack.
Sitting down on the edge of my bare bed I rest my chin in my fist and begin to think about my life. I grew up here in Brookings only ever getting the chance to leave to go to college. Being in Orange, California for college was really the best time of my life, the happiest I've ever been. Not that I don't love my life in Oregon, my parents ,Lorina and Denny, are close by and I had a job at the town library but for some reason I just felt unhappy and stuck, like I should be farther in my life as a 28 year old. After college I had a hard time finding a job in California with an English degree so after a couple of months struggling to get by in California with a crappy minimum wage job I decided it would be best to move back home. I've been back for about 5 years now and always dreamt of going back to California. After having multiple conversations with Ryan and Marielle they finally convinced me to come live with them for a little bit to get a fresh start.
I think this is the best thing for me at this point in my life and I truly have nothing really holding me to Oregon. I'm single, not many friends other than a few of my old coworkers from the library and of course Ryan and his fiancé, and my parents are out living their own life now as empty nesters with both me and my younger sister Lydia out of the house. I'm really excited for California. I get to be with my best friend and see what all the state really has to offer.
