The laughter surrounding them did nothing to soothe River's anxiety as their group made their way to L'Manburg's walls.
With the sun beating down on them, they let their feet slow. It was one thing to keep watch over a bunch of poorly trained boys. Now they had to fight them, maybe even kill them. Something about that did not sit well with River. Their stomach began to churn at the thought of killing anyone. Killing mobs was a lot different than killing a person and they didn't know if they were ready to do it.
As if sensing their unease George turned back and slowed his pace to match theirs. "Hey," he placed a hand on their shoulder giving it a light squeeze "Are you doing ok?" River sighed and looked next to them at George, he was giving them a concerned look but let his hand drop. Letting a heavy sigh leave their chest, they started twisting the strap of their bag.
"I don't want to do this George." They whispered looking ahead of them. Dream was at the front talking to Punz. Most likely going over strategy and assessing any weapons we had. Sapnap was behind them seemingly relaxed with his hands in his pockets. No one else seemed to share their dread.
"Why? They took our land?" He continued, looking ahead at everyone else as well.
"There's kids fighting George!" Quietly exclaiming, they shot their head in his direction. The wringing on their strap became tighter.
"Why didn't you sit it out then? Why did you agree with Dream?" River tightened their grip then let go of the strap, turning back forward they saw Sapnap glancing back at them with furrowed brows. They gave him a small smile and a shake of their head to let him know not to worry. He didn't seem to believe it by the hesitant nod he did in return before facing forward again. It wasn't long before Dream and Punz brought him into their conversation and he became occupied with them.
"Don't get me wrong Gogy, I agree that that land should be ours. That they overstepped their boundaries. I don't agree with fighting children, ever. But..." They reached over and laid a hand on George's shoulder giving it a light squeeze. "You guys mean the world to me," they smiled brightly despite their nerves "if you need me I'll be there for you."
George sighed and smiled exasperated. Still he leaned over and bumped his shoulder with theirs causing them to stumble a bit to the side and yell out in surprise. Laughing at the look of betrayal on their face he hurried his pace a bit to get out of their reach. "The same goes for you too, River. Just so you know." He smiled and went ahead to catch up to the other 3 boys. Looking ahead at them and seeing the sun shining brightly through the tree leaves, River couldn't help but feel at peace.
It wasn't long before they approached one of the tall black walls, everyone had stopped talking a while ago. Punz quickly and quietly got to work setting the ladder up and gave the go ahead as soon as it was done. Punz was the first to go up, followed by Sapnap and George. River was about to follow them up the ladder when they felt a hand tug on their bicep. Quickly turning, Dream stood there, his mask staring back at them.
