My parents dragged us halfway around the world to live in the country side of England. I have a huge new room that I filled with my musical instruments. My parents think that this will be a good change for all of us but I don't think so, this is going to suck either way.
I have a huge walk in closet that I have filled with all my new clothes and the uniform that I have to wear to school. I put my books in order on the shelf and set up my music things, I am like seriously OCD. Everything is in the perfect order. In the small room that leads off mine I put my archery and sword fighting things. Maybe it will be okay here after all.
I take my new bike out for a spin and explore the town. People point at me as I pass, I try to ignore them. I don't like people looking at me unless I am on a stage acting. I've just gone past the library when a girl rides her bike up next to mine. She has copper coloured hair and green eyes. I have dark red hair and silver gray eyes.
"Hello," She calls to me, we slow down and stop. "I'm Isabelle," She says holding out her hand. I shake it and say. "I'm Helen." Isabelle smiles. "Welcome to England." I smile back. "Thanks." Isabelle turns and yells over her shoulder, "Jessie! Livy! Come meet the new girl, Helen!" Two girls hurry up to us. One has blond hair and green eyes, the other has blond hair and blue eyes. The girl with blond hair and green eyes smiles, "I am Olivia or Livy." The girl with the blond hair and blue eyes gives a small bow. "I would be Jessamine or Jessie." Isabelle smiles wider, "As I said, I am Isabelle or Izzy." I smile sheepishly "I am Helen uh, just Helen." The three girls laugh.
"So where are you from?" Jessamine asks. "Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada." I answer. "So where are you going to go to school?" Olivia asks. "Lord Williams." I reply. The three girls smile, "That's where we go," Isabelle says. "Hey, why don't you sit with us at lunch on Monday." Jessamine suggests. I smile, "That would great, thanks." Livy smiles. "Do you have a phone? Then we can give you our numbers." I pull it out and hand it to her, the three girls punch in their numbers. I send each of them a quick, "hey I have your number now!" text. "We'll try to find you on Monday!" Isabelle calls as I tell them I have to go. I wave and pedal off toward home. Home? Did I just call this place home? Wow I must be tired!
I curl up in my huge bed and try to sleep but something keeps me awake, I may have friends here. I only had one really good friend at home in Vancouver, Jane. But she didn't even get upset when I told her we were leaving. Oh well I guess even if you are friends since kinder garden you can be forgotten in a second. Finally I fall asleep.
In the morning I am shooting arrows into a target when my mother comes into the room. "Helen, your father and I are going into town to buy some groceries, we'll be back in a few hours." I nod and shoot a few more arrows into the target. "Alright," I say and shoot another arrow. Mom and Dad leave for town and I continue to shoot arrows.
On Monday I get up and put my uniform on, a black skirt, a dark red collared-button-down dress shirt, black leggings and hiking boots. I put sapphire studs in my ears and a digital watch on my wrist. I pull my hair into a ponytail, I'm all set. I pick up my black messenger bag and leave my room for breakfast.
I ride my bike to school and lock it up, I head up the steps and find the office. I get handed my schedule by the secretary, "Xavier," She calls to a passing boy. "Will you take Helen to her first class? It's music." The boy has golden blond hair and deep green eyes. "Sure," He calls. I walk over to him and he starts to lead me down the hallway. "This way Lennie." He says, "My name is Helen." I say. The boy-Xavier shrugs, "Sure, haven't you heard of nick-names?" I snort. "Of course I have, I grew up in Canada; not the US!" Xavier laughs. "Good for you, come on Lennie. We have music."
The music room is awesome, it's large and has everything a music room should have. "Mrs.Miller," Xavier says to the teacher, "This is Lennie, a new student." I smile. "Helen." I correct. Mrs.Miller smiles. "Welcome Helen, we shall get things sorted out for you in a moment. I have to finish taking attendance." I nod and wait for her to finish.
"So Helen," Mrs.Miller says, "What do you play?" I smile. "Alright here we go. I play, the clarinet, bass clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, oboe, flute, bassoon, french horn, baritone horn, trumpet and trombone, violin, Viola and cello." I finish. Mrs.Miller looks taken a back, "Wow, you are accomplished." She thinks for a moment, "We don't have any strings here as they cost more so why don't you bring your violin or viola in?" I smile. "Sure,"
Mrs.Miller turns to the rest of the class, "Get out your instruments and warm up." Then she turns back to me. "Helen you can choose any of the brass instruments that you play and share with someone today." I nod, "What will you being with us in the future?" She asks. I hesitate, "The violin." I decide. Mrs.Miller nods then asks, "What would you like to play today?" I smile. "The french horn." Xavier comes up beside us, "I'll get her one." He volunteers. Mrs.Miller smiles and nods, "Share music while you're at it." She says.
Xavier helps get me a french horn and we sit together and I glance down his music. My heart sinks, this is all too easy. I take a deep breath, it will be fine. I will still play, obviously. Class starts and I listen to the announcements with the other students. Then we start playing a piece of music. Xavier is helpful when class ends, he shows me where to put the horn and then smiles. "Where's your next class?" I check my schedule. "English with Miss.Thomas." I tell him. He gestures for me to follow him. "So Lennie, where are you from in Canada?" Xavier asks. "Vancouver." I tell him. "Why?" I shrug. "How should I know? My parents never tell me anything." Xavier smirks. "Maybe they're really murderers and they are here to "take care of someone" or the town?" I snort. "No, they are not murderers. I think I'd know if they were."
Xavier leads me into my English class and takes me up to the teacher. "Miss.Thomas, this is Lennie. A new student." He says. "Helen." I correct. Miss.Thomas smiles, "Nice to meet you Helen," she says. Xavier walks out and Miss.Thomas gives me the things we are working on (Shakesphere) and explains a few things to me about class. "There's a space where Helen can sit here." A voice calls and I see Isabelle. I smile at her, Miss.Thomas smiles too. "Yes, Helen. You go sit with Isabelle, she will explain things to you." I nod and sit down in the second row.
Class is actually pretty cool and I enjoy it a lot. When it ends Isabelle turns to me, "Come on we can find your locker and then we can go have lunch with Livy and Jessie." I nod and follow her from the room. "Let's see your schedule," Isabelle says. I pull it out and Isabelle smiles, "Helen, your locker is with Jessie's, Livy's and mine." I follow her down the hall.
Jessamine and Olivia are already at their lockers when Isabelle and I arrive. "Hey! You found Helen!" Jessamine says. I smile at them, "Hi," I say. I follow the three of them off to the cafeteria. We sit together at a table and eat our lunch. "What do you have next?" Livy asks. "Math," I answer. "Mr.St.Claire." I say. Jessamine grins, "Me too, we can go together." I smile and nod.
"So," Isabelle says smiling, "Xavier walked you to class this morning." She has this sing-song note in her voice. Jessamine and Livy grin, "You've only been here one morning and you already have a boy walking you to class." I snort, "You think that Xavier has a crush on me?" I roll my eyes. Isabelle turns to Livy, "Your brother has a crush on our friend." I look at them, "Xavier is your brother?" I demand. They laugh, "Yeah, lucky me." Livy says. Jessamine smirks, "Aw, do you have a crush on Xavier?" I snort, "No I do not, I don't have a crush on Xavier or anybody!" We spend the rest of lunch joking and laughing.
When lunch is over Jessie and I walk to math together. Mr.St.Claire is a loud man who is always grinning at us. Jessamine walks me to Civics and careers next and then leaves for her own next class. I enjoy the class I guess but it's kind of boring.
When class ends I follow the map I have in my mind back to the front of the school where I left my bike. I unlock it and am about to ride home when a voice calls, "Lennie!" I turn as Xavier runs toward me. "Want me to show me to your first class tomorrow?" He asks, I shrug. "If you want to." Xavier smiles, "I'll meet you here then." I nod, give a little salute and ride home.
