I have so many passionate thoughts about this subject.
On Twitter, I've heard about people literally naming their kids after anime characters?
Now, naming your kid after a fictional character isn't inherently weird. But when you think about anime specifically and westerners naming their kids after characters, it gets kinda stranger.
And if an anime character has an English name, then I see no problem with it. I'd totally name my daughter Faye after Faye from Cowboy Bebop.
But for one, not only are most anime characters Japanese, a lot of anime characters' names don't even exist in the actual language. Like Naruto. He's literally named after the fishcakes in ramen.
You are literally naming your kid fish cake. That's like if I called my kid Crouton or something.
Or Ino. Her name means "boar," and if my parents fucking named me "pig" I'd have a lot of beef with them.
But even if it's a "normal" Japanese name, think of how weird it is to name your kid a Japanese name if you're not Japanese. Like, I'm Arab, and if a non Arab/Muslim named their kid Abdulrahman I'd be a little weirded out.
So basically, Americans, don't name your kids after anime characters except if they're Western names.
(Pets are totally cool though, if I ever get a black cat you better believe I'm calling it Yoruichi)
