Two days later, Agatha's world exploded.
It had been a long day at the hospital, and she was exhausted. She had been experiencing slight discomfort for a few days, but she had an appointment to see the doctor the following morning, so she wasn't overly worried about it.
Merrick had tried to talk to her a few times, which added to her stress, but she had successfully side-stepped him every time he approached her. She knew they would eventually have to talk, but she wasn't ready. She was still trying to absorb the fact that she was going to have a baby, and she didn't need Merrick making her feel guilty or upset about it.
Agatha realized that she still had to find a way to tell her parents too.
As she entered her apartment, she threw her keys and bag on the table and sighed in relief as she took off her shoes. What she needed now was a short nap before she found something to eat. She quickly stripped out of her work clothes, took a shower, and pulled on a loose t-shirt before she fell into bed. Sleep would make everything better.
It was only a few hours later that she awakened to unbearable pain. There was blood on her sheets, and the pain was so bad she couldn't breathe. Her first thought was of the baby that she was already so protective of, but then the nurse part of her kicked in, and she realized that what was happening could be very serious for her health.
With a shaking hand, she reached out for her phone and turned it on, dropping it a few times before she had the strength and coordination to type a text to Sam.
'S.O.S. Home." Was all she could type before another wave of pain hit her, and she dropped her phone as she cradled her stomach.
Agatha attempted to get up, but she only fell to the floor in the process. She had a good idea of what was happening, and it meant that their baby wasn't going to live.
It felt like forever before she heard the front door open and then saw Merrick round the corner to the bedroom. The sight of him so calm and capable relieved her of the need to take care of herself, and she collapsed, unable to be strong any longer.
"It's the baby!" she gasped as tears of pain and sorrow streamed down her face. "I'm losing our baby!" she reached for his hand and clasped it in her own as Merrick's face paled while he knelt next to her and rolled her on her back. His exam was brief before he reached for his phone and dialed a number.
"How quickly can you get to the hospital? You can still practice there until the end of the month, correct?" He asked as he reached for a blanket off the bed and gently started to wrap Agatha in it.
Merrick had to be talking to Silas, which confirmed Agatha's fears of an ectopic pregnancy.
"Agatha. I believe she has an ectopic pregnancy with a rupture."
Agatha started crying even harder. That meant that pregnancy would be even more complicated in the future if she lived. The internal bleeding alone could kill her if they didn't get her to the hospital fast.
"I can't. The baby is mine." Merrick ended the call and then scooped her up, taking her to his car. "Hang on, love. Silas is going to meet us at the hospital."
The rest of it was a blur. Merrick carried her into the hospital, shouting orders with no patience at all when his demands weren't met right away. It felt like an hour but must have been only a few minutes later when Silas arrived with a nurse who gave her something for the pain.
Then her world went black.
*******
When Agatha came to, she was in a darkened room. She knew it was daylight outside because she could see the sunlight peeking in from under the curtain, and when she tried to sit up, the pain was too much to bear, so she rested back on the bed.
