She Welcomed It

By: Milz

" Omnes qui intrat nunquam vidi iterum. Vivat aurea draco." The deadly chant echoed through the musty corridors underneath the city. Dark figures in black hoods chanted in sync. Candle wax dripped down the narrow sides of the gold and red walls. Blood dripped slowly from the statue's eyes. Suddenly, all figures ripped off their hoods. There was at least three hundred or so, men and women alike. They all had pale ghostly skin and emerald eyes. A dark and beautiful smile was cast upon their faces. The bright glow of the candles coated their pale skin, with a sinister shine.

All at once, the ghastly people lined up. They lined up so mechanically, so perfect. It was almost too hard to explain. At, the front of this line, a man sat on a black stool.  The man was out of the ordinary. He didn't look human, nor did he look like the others. He had a dark pointed hood on. Along with dark blue eye, and a matching blue robe. The sinister man was holding a fairly large needle, almost like a tattoo gun. It in fact was a tattoo gun!  The needle was leaving a gold trace of a bird on each mortal's back. The bird had a fierce expression and gold feathers. A bright light flashed, and everything was gone."

Abruptly, Matilda woke up. Was it all a dream? She quickly got out of bed. "After all this kind if event wouldn't happen in real life. Especially to a sixteen year old girl, she thought" Matilda had other things to worry about - boys, drama club, and her final exam. Definitely not a silly dream. As she went down stairs, no one was there. This was normal. Her parents usually left for work, before she even woke up. Matilda had an especially bad feeling about the day, at least more than usual. Her little brother Noah wasn't there and she didn't recall her brother's, friend's, mom picking him up. "He's fourteen, he can handle himself", she thought.

A sense of fear rushed through her veins. Then, the phone started to ring. Matilda answered it suspiciously. She didn't need one more crazy thing added to her already busy day. She picked up the phone, it was her mom. She asked Matilda if she could bring Noah to school. She gasped and quickly agreed and hung up the phone. This day was all too weird. She sat down in front of the TV, turned it on, and flipped to the news. A reporter in a crisp black suit announced that a criminal was on the loose. He said the witness had reported the criminal was a male, about thirteen or fourteen years old, approximately 5'8 and dangerous. The male she described was her brother!

Matilda threw some sweatpants on and her favorite stained hoodie. Hopped on the bus and rode it straight to the police station. Only, to find her brother being fingerprinted. Suddenly, he ripped out of the cuffs. He turned around and looked at Matilda. Noah had a dark and beautiful smile, pale skin, emerald eyes, and a golden bird tattoo. She was too terrified to see the the policemen, bystanders, secretary, and other criminals transforming into men and women with beautiful smiles, pale skin, emerald eyes, and that all too familiar bird on their bodies. Closing in on her and chanting, " Omnes qui intrat nunquam vidi iterum. Vivat aurea draco."  translating to, "All who enters will never be seen again. Long live the golden bird." Matilda ran home like a bat out of hell. Her parents wouldn't even answer their phones. More importantly, who truly was her brother? Matilda fixed herself a hearty dinner. It was late at night. She laid her head down, and heard a familiar voice chanting," Omnes qui intrat nunquam vidi iterum. Vivat aurea draco." This time she wasn't scared, she was sick of it. It took her mother and her brother. All she wanted was to be with them. This time she didn't fear the darkness, she welcomed it.
