"I don't understand why I couldn't just stay with Dad!" I yell at my mother as we drive over the bridge connected the mainland to the outer banks. "Skye, you know why. Your dad is not safe to be around right now." My mother sighed. I rolled my eyes and stared out of the window for the rest of the trip.
We finally pull into a small shack of a house and start unloading stuff. "You get to pick out your room." My mom smiles at me, and my younger brother pouted. I picked the room that overlooked the marsh, it was pretty, I'll give it that. I unpacked all my stuff and smiled. It didn't look too bad. "I'm going outside." I said, and my mom yelled an "okay" from her room. I went out the back door and went to the dock that came with the house. I sat on the edge of the dock and let my feet dangle in the water. I could feel the tears coming so I just let them fall. I haven't cried since I hugged my dad for the seemingly last time. But my sob session was cut short when a boat pulled up next to the dock. "Hey! You okay?" I girl with curly brown hair asked. "Yeah, i'm good." I sighed, and quickly rubbed the tears away. "Cool, well, I'm Kiara, but everyone calls me Kie, this is Sarah, Pope, John B, and JJ." All the people in the boat waved. "I'm Skye." I gave a half smile. "Well, we're going on a ride through the marsh, you wanna come with?" The girl Kie introduced as Sarah asked. "Yeah sure, just give me second." I said, and jogged back to the house, and poking my head in the back door. "Hey mom, some kids asked if I wanted to go ride on their boat with them, and they're gonna show me around! I'll be back soon!" I yelled. My mom stepped out of her room and came over to me. "Okay, but be safe, and text me every now and then so I know you're okay." My mom told me, and waved to the group of kids who were now back in their boat. I nodded, and went back down to the dock before JJ helped me onto the boat. "Welcome to the HMS Pogue." John B smiled. "Pogue?" I questioned as we started going through the marsh. "That's what everyone calls the working class. The Pogues. You see, in the OBX there's two kinds of people. The people who have two houses, The Kooks, we call them. And the people who work two jobs. That's us. The Pogues." Pope explained. "Do you want to be a Pogue Skye?" JJ asked, with an eyebrow raised. "Do I have to do anything to become one?" I laughed. "Just pledge your undying loyalty to us by drinking a beer." JJ Grinned, handing me a coors light. I took the bottle from him and smiled. "I think I can do that."
By the time John B got back to my dock, we had played 20 questions, watched JJ fall into the swamp after failing miserably at balancing n the side of the boat, and sang until our throats were sore. I had felt like I'd known these guys my whole life. I was about to walk up to my house when Sarah and Kie stopped me. "we're having a party at this place called the boneyard tomorrow, do you wanna come with us?" Kie asked. "Sure, why not." I smiled, and Sarah squealed. "Okay great! We'll pick you up at 6." Sarah and Kie hugged me, and the boys waved from the boat. I waved back and then made the short walk back to my house, where my mom was in the living room waiting for me. "Did you have fun?" She asked as I plopped down next to her. "Yeah, actually. One of the kids is actually our neighbor, and they invited me to a party tomorrow." I told her. "I knew this would be good for us." My mother grinned, and gave me a kiss on the forehead before going back into her room. I went to mine and changed into some pajamas before crawling into bed and falling asleep.
