Dear Future Me,

I see you.

I see you in college making the most of it. You're finally out of your childhood home, away from the religious suppression you were forced to stay in. You're finally free.

I see you expressing yourself on the outside, wearing those pins that you were raised to be against, picking out those clothes you've always been eyeing, and styling your hair in ways your parents would never allow. Those flags decorating your room, your clothing, your backpacks. They really make me smile.

I see you dating that person you've been afraid to speak to. I see you shaking off your parent's disapproving voices and faces from your mind and following your heart. I know we always guarded our hearts and thought love was impossible to find and not worth it to seek out, but I see you finding it in this person. I see you and that person falling in love together, and it's beautiful. Maybe you'll even get married.

I see you achieving your dreams, becoming a medical professional. I know you thought you couldn't do it because it looked too hard and all the odds seemed against you—you're black, you're queer, and you're a woman—but look at you now. Your patients are lucky to have you.

I see you finally working on those stories that you've been holding inside for so long. I see you writing those fantasy series that will touch hundreds of LGBT+ people, young and old, that have felt just like you—scared, alone, depressed, anxious, and sick of hiding who they are. You're changing and saving lives, Future Me.

I see you, Future Me. You thought you wouldn't be able to make it because the mountain you had to climb looked really high from where you were.

But I see you at the top now.

Look back down at me and remember where you came from, and then look at where you are.

You've come so far.

I'm so proud of you.

Remember this feeling and move on to the next mountain.

Remember, don't bash yourself for each misstep, it's a part of the process. You know this.

Keep going, Future Me. Keep going for us.

I love you,
~ High School You
