Into the Forest She Goes

"WAIT!!!" Eclipse's footsteps hit the fallen leaves as she ran through her garden. "STOP!!!"

She had seen a small light, a glowing little Will-o'-the'wisp. She'd seen them before, but this one pulled her. Pulled her after, made her forget all the stories. This was her destiny. She had always laughed at all the stories about dumb princesses following these lights, thinking she would resist. Had she known seeing her Will-o'-the-wisp felt like this... She would not have laughed.

"Eclipse!" the shout came to her as through honey, melted and whispered.  She payed no attention, not even noticing Solaria's sunset hair fly out after her as she, too, ran down the sidewalk. "What are you doing?!"

Solaria almost had caught up to Eclipse when she suddenly braked. "No! Where are you going?!"

The trees. They stopped her. They loomed out, placing their almost bare branches in front of her, as to say stop. The feeling was mutual - there was no way she would go in. Solaria watched, helpless, as her best friend crashed through the barrier separating the real world and the death atmosphere of the forest. Soon she couldn't see Eclipse's bright blue hair, and her footsteps faded. Feeling tears drip down her face, she sank down, right in front of the invisible barrier separating them now.

--

Morning found her right there, curled up on the dirt, tears staining her cheeks. She got up, and slowly trudged home. Gone. Eclipse - gone. Nobody left for her in this desolate world. Besides newbie Cleo, and sunshine idiot Tourmaline.

She felt the Will-o'-the-wisp before she saw it. Sunshiny yellow, her favorite. It was pulling her back to the treeline, towards Eclipse. Maybe it was her destiny to be the stupid secondary character to run off after the main one - and get killed in the process. If she was going to - and she knew she wouldn't be able to resist the glow for much longer - she would be ready.

Beep

"Hey, Cleo? I'm off to the forest. Meet me at your house. Pack your bag and get ready."

Solaria shut her phone, placed it on her charger. She might need it as a flashlight later.
