HOMEGIRL | Squid Game

Jin-ae tucked her hair behind her ear, ready to run. The doll turns around and sings, "Green light." Most of the players cautiously walk over the white line, unsure of the catch of the game. A boy with fried yellow hair bolts in front of everyone, but he is going too fast to stay still. The unfamiliar voice of a woman says "Player 324, eliminated." And we aren't sure of what that means until the gunshot rings out. He falls to the ground and chokes up blood when another young boy runs to his side. Once he realizes he's moved he runs towards us until the gunshots send his body to the ground. Jin-ae helplessly tries to hold still as the crowd of people push against her, running towards the previously open doors the crowd came through. The air fills with the metallic taste of fresh blood as more gunshots fire from all sides of her.

No one escapes the eyes of "It" and soon there are at least 100 bodies splayed across the floor leaking pools of crimson blood. A woman runs past her, and out of her peripheral Jin-ae sees her body being forced to the ground just seconds before she feels a warm liquid splash her arm. Trying to focus less on the blood dripping down her arm, she sees a girl who looks no more than 18 hiding behind a man with an ugly snake tattooed on his neck. That was the girl who was in a fight earlier. The doll once again turns around and says the words, "Green light." No one but an old man moves.

After a few more rounds, people begin to slowly creep forward, still scared by the bullets that could end them at any second. As more people stumble, fall, and get eliminated, the timer counts down. 2 minutes. The young girl with the short hair grabs the man in front of her and pulls him to the ground. She runs in front of him as he scrambles to get up. People flinch every time a gunshot rings out from the cannons hidden in the sky and Jin-ae tries to get to the front of the group. She runs past bodies, some of which are still raking in breath. In front of her people are being knocked to the ground with blood spraying out their heads and chests. But she's almost there, almost to the finish line. The girl is almost in the lead, she leaps over the red line, and is safe. 20 seconds left. Jin-ae is so close to the line, when the doll says "Green light" for one of the last times, she risks it all and jumps over the line just before "It" turns around. She's safe. There's only five seconds left and it's clear almost twenty people won't make it. Jin-ae turns around and squeezes her eyes shut, she can't watch this.

After the last gunshots echo rings out, two walls roll in and block out the sky above.
