Trees filled the valley below, each leave varying in color. Despite you being above the forest, you still felt small. You leaned your crossed arms against the metal railing and sighed, watching the frosted air hover in front of you before slowing disappearing. Fall just only began yet the temperature was already dropping.
"You alright?"
You turn to your left, to see Swatch staring you, copying your posture. You smiled and bump shoulders.
"Yeah, Champ, of course," you respond, a hint of humor in your voice. They huff and look away.
"I told you not to call me 'Champ' - it's... immature."
You snort, "like I'm the prime example of maturity."
A silence falls before the two of you. You open your mouth and then close it. Hesitance rolls off you like waves.
Biting the bullet, you turn to Swatch. "Can I be like, super deep right now?"
Although it is tinted, you can see their eyes widened. "O-Of course, my dear," they lean forward a bit, "is something troubling you?"
You look down at your toes. "I'm not sure. It's just... Ugh, I don't know, I always feel like I have to make others happy so that they'll like me.
"All throughout school, it was just a game of me fighting for some kid's praise and it was never enough. If I'm not liked by anyone... then I'm not good enough."
They tighten their lips to a thin line and hum. "Well," they start, "I like you a lot. And you're doing good enough you make lots of people happy.
"Like me," they add as an afterthought.
You smile, a real genuine one. "Thank you."
They rubbed your cheek. "You are very welcome."
"Okay, well, since I've spilled my guts out... Got any deep secrets you wanna tell me?" You giggle, only half-joking. You watch as they roll their eyes.
"Well..."
You gasp and push closer to them. "No. Wait. Do you actually have some deep, secret fact?!"
They glanced around and cup their mouth, leaning to your ear. Your voice hitches and you pray that they notice your face warming at the contact.
"When I was still a butler..."
You held your breath in anticipation.
"... a short, gremlin man snuck into the place and stole my uniform in order to impersonate me."
"WHAT THE HELL?!?" you scream, pushing them away. They bursted into laughter as you slapped their arm. "WHAT KIND OF SECRET IS THAT!?! IS THAT EVEN TRUE!!??
They nod between wheezes.
"What the hell is wrong with you," you mutter while trying to contain your own laughter.
"I'm not joking!! H-He came in when I was on shift and genuinely thought it would work," they explained, still giggling.
"You have to be lying. I do not believe you."
"I am dead serious," they said, sobering up. You shake your head and rub your temple, leaning back on the railing, only letting your elbows touch the bar this time. "I would not lie about this."
"You..." you trail off, staring at them from the corner of your eye.
"Me," they say with a smile, maintaining eye contact.
Your cheeks heat up a bit and you push yourself off the bars. "Wanna go back home? Not to diss these trees, but the half-mile walk was NOT worth the view."
They follow your actions. "You totally dissed the trees right there. But yes, my scrumptious cheesecake, I would like to leave."
You groan as you pull their arm. They don't resist and you let go to clasp your hands together. You grin and yank them toward you, earning a surprised yelp from them.
"I love you Swatch," you say, a shit-eating grin atop your face.
They smile as they pull you closer, "I love you too."
