Just Another Fairy Tale

Prologue

I’m running through the forest as fast as I can, the wind is slicing through my fur and I can hear wolves growling behind me. I speed up, but in my heart I know it’s useless… this time I can’t outrun them, I’m too tired, and they have to many wolves. The Alpha senses it to, and howls in delight. They’ve been searching for me for a long time, but never before have they caught me… and they won’t today. I won’t let myself be part of their pack. I change course, running towards where I know there’s an ocean… and a cliff. The pack is confused… the ocean is deep in their territory, deeper than they’ve ever chased me before.

The wolf howls for reinforcements, but nobody comes. He’s already got the entire pack chasing me. I get closer and closer to the cliff. I can smell the sea salt, and I can almost feel the spray that surrounds the cliff because of the crashing waves. Irun into the clearing right in front of the cliff, but I don’t even slow down. The Alpha enters the clearing shortly after, just in time to see me sprint right over the edge. I hear him howl in pain and part of me wants to go back, and comfort him, but I know it’s not possible.

About half way to the water I change, twisting and turning, my body contracting, getting smaller and smaller, until I am a bird, a seagull. I fly upwards and the wolves look confused. They didn’t see me change, they didn’t look over the cliff in time, but they know I should be falling. They should be watching my body tumble through the air, but instead there is just a seagull.

Nobody saw me change, and none of them suspect that I am the same being, that I could possibly be more than just another werewolf. I pity them for their Naive minds. They have never seen a creature transform into anything other than a wolf, so they don’t believe it’s possible. I don’t know how they haven’t figured it out by now though. I never die, no matter how many obstacles they put in front of me. Not that they would want me to die. They just want me in their pack, but I will never except that… no matter how much it hurts, because I will not hurt them, and in this world… knowledge can hand you a more painful death than you could ever imagine.
