"Why were you outside?"

It sounded like a perfectly normal question. But the girl standing in front of Ran Haitani knew better. She knew that behind his serene smile lay anger. He was sitting much too stiffly in his chair for that. She knew that not only she, but also her bodyguard behind her was in big trouble. So she tried with all her might to suppress her trembling.

The older of the Haitani brothers didn't seem to be having a good day, and it wasn't just because of the situation she was in. Something must have happened during his mission. It wasn't often for Ran Haitani to be in a bad mood, but of all situations it had to happen in this one. That would make their current position even more difficult.

"Tell me. I'm not mad. I just want to understand."

Lies. Lies. Lies.

She saw it in his rough movements as he rested his right foot on his left knee, propped his elbow on the lean, and rubbed two fingers across his chin.

Scattered strands across his forehead, of his otherwise immaculate purple-black hair, were proof that a physical fight had taken place.

The girl knew it would only make him angrier if she didn't speak or if she lied to him, so she spoke the truth.

"I went to the pharmacy."

Ran leaned forward a little. Not satisfied with her answer.

"Darling I know where you were. I asked you why."

Her heart was racing so fast, she could feel the heartbeat in her mouth. Ran's patience was about to run out.

"I was in pain and there were no more pain killers."

Tense, her fingers clawed at the wool sweater he'd bought her.She was only allowed to wear clothes Ran got her - not that she owned any others. Not here, anyway. Not at Bonten's headquarters, not at Ran's apartment, where he had taken her one day because he was fond of her. Just like that. Her life was torn from her hands from one moment to the next because a strange man had taken a liking to her. She hadn't consented. How could she, she was not even asked. She was aware that she had no choice. Not with his threats anyway.

Ran's eyes actually reflected concern. Because no matter what kind of psychopath or murderer he was, the fact that he cared for the girl in front of him in his own sick way was no secret. Otherwise, he wouldn't have kidnapped and kept her with him as if she were a puppy he had chosen at the shelter.

The sweater should have protected her from the cold she had already been feeling for a few days. It almost broke Ran's heart when he found her feverish in her bed a few days ago.

"Are you at least feeling better now?"

"Yes-yes!" she lied hectically. The pain pills had been for her stabbing, barely tolerable headache that had throbbed all the way to her eyes. Had she known how violently the pain would now echo in her skull, she certainly wouldn't have left his house.

Ran's soft eyes hardened as his gaze fell from the lovely figure before him, to her bodyguard against the wall.

"Where have you been? Why didn't you get her the pills?"

The brief relief in the sick girl's chest vanished instantly at the purple-haired man's icy tone.

"I'm sorry sir." The bodyguard bowed. "I got a call to join you as backup right away."

"Who called you?" Ran's freezing voice made the man flinch in his bow before he stood up straight again.

"Hasegawa, sir," he replied.
