Epilogue

I sat in my room while waiting for my parents to stop fighting, I was only six. I don't understand why this is happening. I just want things to go back to normal like they were yesterday. We had fun laughing, screaming, and being scared while watching a horror movie. I was happy to spend time with my parents, because they would usually be busy with work of some sort. I wasn't even in first grade yet, I only had a week left before school started, and this is how my week had begun. Great. I bet it'll be much fun.

As I sat in my room, tears began to stream down my face. I felt a mixture of fear and sadness that my once happy family was now falling apart right before my eyes. My mind raced with thoughts of what the future might hold for us - would we have to move? Would I need to switch schools and make new friends? The uncertainty of it all made me feel sick to my stomach. It seemed unfair that other kids got to enjoy their last week of summer break without a care in the world while I was stuck in this mess. But there was nothing I could do about it; I just had to hope things would somehow get better.

The sound of a door slamming jolted me out of my thoughts. I couldn't hear any more yelling, so maybe they were done fighting for now. Slowly, I crept out of my room and tiptoed towards the living room where my parents were sitting on opposite ends of the couch, not looking at each other or speaking. The tension in the air was palpable, but at least there wasn't any shouting anymore. A part of me wanted to ask them what was wrong and why they were fighting, but another part feared that asking questions might provoke more arguing.

Instead, I quietly walked over to our bookshelf and picked up one of my favorite books - "Charlotte's Web." This story always managed to comfort me when life got tough by transporting me into another world filled with friendship and compassion among the most unlikely characters: a pig named Wilbur and a spider named Charlotte. As I opened the book and started reading, it felt like an escape from reality where everything was simpler and easier to understand than the complexities unfolding between my mom and dad.
