"We're staying here to rest, since somebody won't shut up about being tired."
Always good to know my complaints have been heard.
The two of us had been wandering for quite some time. We're stopped at a hallway, we just came from a small plaza that was thankfully deserted. Error didn't have a clear direction he was going, and expressed multiple times under his breath that he didn't have an idea of where to start either. He had been growing very frustrated, and killed another civilian who dared approach and ask if he was alright. No wonder he'd want to rest.
This isn't usual of him, however. Error has a fucked up vendetta against sleep, hates it and everything to do with it. Longest he's gone without sleep was a month and a half, at least that's what I heard from Blue. He said the only way he got to sleep was by getting angry at something and passing out from exhaustion. I don't remember clearly and I wasn't there for it.
I just assumed he'd let me sleep and stay up, but this wasn't the case apparently.
"Finally!" I sit down against a wall, not the most comfortable place to sleep but I'll take anything honestly, and Error leans up against the same wall. "It's been fucking ages since I last slept. Though, how do I know you won't kill me in my sleep?"
He doesn't respond, but I'm answered anyways because it looks like he's trying to sleep too. Albeit he's standing up, and way too tense to sleep, but he's trying.
"What? You're going to sleep too?"
He opens his eyes, but doesn't look my way.
"Cause if you are, that's a pathetic excuse for sleep." I continue.
Error laughs halfheartedly. "What did you think I was going to do?"
"Not sleep. Unless it's been a month since you last slept, then I'd kind of believe it."
"It hasn't. I slept last week."
Really? "So why are you sleeping now?"
He contemplated for a moment.
"You don't need to know."
"I've already established that I need to know everything, all the time. I won't stop asking."
"Then we can continue walking and I'll kick you every time you fall asleep." Error smiled, in a twisted way. It was not a friendly smile (in fact, it was incredibly threatening. He looked straight at me, too. I didn't know he could even make eye contact), but I'm still counting it.
"Hah!" I don't think he was joking. It was still funny, I think. My sense of humor has been rotting for a while. "If we do that, I'll keep nagging you. We're in for a long ride if we're trying to find Blue, so I suggest being a little more open about your thoughts. To make it easier for the both of us."Error looks away, I can only assume to ponder what I had said. I wouldn't consider myself something that occupies his mind often, but what else would he be thinking about? The smile had dropped from his face. His expression shifts into something more anxious. No way I can identify the emotion.
It took less convincing than I thought it would. "Fine," He says blankly as he pushes himself away from the wall and settling to sit down against the one parallel to it. "I-" He hesitates, tripping over his words. "Going without sleep for too long fucks with my head. I hallucinate on occasion. I can deal with it most of the time, and I do, but right now it's a little more than I can take."
"Huh. Okay. You sure sleep's gonna help? Y'know, nightmares and all."
Error glances at me, presumably surprised at the lack of teasing. It's not like I haven't had my fair share of issues, I know better than to pile on right now.
"...No. I'm fairly certain I will still be taunted by them. But I hold out hope it won't be as bad as what I'm seeing."I can't help but feel bad for him. There's not a lot he can do in this situation, can't ask for help from people that could help him, 'cause he's murdered a few people. Nearly everyone in the Multiverse hates him for it, except for Blue and on the off chance, the other voices. I don't like him for it, he killed me after all, but I wouldn't refuse to help him if he's lost most of what he has. It's very well his own damn fault, he can make the choice not to kill people, but he's gone a long time alone without memory of who he is or how he got to the point he's at. You can't exactly blame him for being a little stressed. Not to mention a bunch of outside forces that want him dead, or at the very least gone. Now Blue's missing, the one second chance he's ever gotten and likely will ever get. And I know Blue too, we all live in the same void. I can't in my right mind drag him down any further. I don't know if it's possible to.
I shift my weight a little, the thought process setting in. "Alright. Just don't murder me again and I don't mind."
A moment passes, and Voice 1 chimes in. "You handled that well."
I have to wonder how they stayed so quiet all this time. They normally have something to say, which isn't bad. Keeps me sane when other people talk.
"Hell yeah I did. I'm the fuckin' best at this shit." I try and lighten the mood.
"No, The both of you! Don't take all the damn credit..."
"Hey! Error wasn't taking the compliment, so I did! Can't get mad at me for being nice to myself." They scoff a bit at this.
"Alright, fine..." They pause. "Is he already asleep?"
I take my eyes off the stars above to glance over at him. He's dead asleep, you can barely see him moving. If I didn't know he was immortal I'd definitely think he had died on the spot.
"Yeah, guess so," I lower my voice. "He doesn't sleep a lot, even for a magic skeleton. 'Course he'd be out in a flash."
"You should sleep too. After all, you were the one to be woken up violently two times in a row.""You think I forgot? I have amnesia, not short-term memory loss," I chuckle for a second. I don't hear Voice 1 laugh, so I try lightening the mood harder. "I'll sleep. Scream really loudly if someone tries to kill me, but laugh hysterically if someone tries to kill Error." That they did laugh at. I adjust my position against the wall one last time before I close my eyes and wait for sleep.
(tried to space out paragraphs, let me know if it works well)
(note: i wrote half of this while listening to she-wolf. insignificant for everyone but one person, i presume)
