It was the next day, end of school and Cami was walking with Alex to her house. She confessed something that had been on her mind all day.

'I'm kinda nervous about meeting your parents,' she said wringing her hands.

'Oh, did I scare you?' Alex looked a little worried, she didn't want to have upset her friend.

'Um, not really, I'm just not sure if they'll like me.'

'They will,' said Alex.  At least, she hoped so.

The autumn leaves fell in swirls around them and the wind bit at their noses and ears. They were wrapped in coats, gloves, hats and scarves. It was SO. COLD. Elsa would be shivering, thought Cami as they walked. They moved into streets that were sort of sketchy, then they got tidier and tidier and they got to Alex's place. The front gardens were neat and tidy and the houses were made of glass and spotless white walls. Alex was pretty well off herself. They walked to number 7 and Alex opened the door with her keys.

'Mummy, Daddy, I'm home and I brought a friend,' Alex called, she sounded nervous, like really nervous. They stepped inside the door and Alex motioned for Cami to take her shoes off and put them on the rack.

One thing Cami noticed straight away is that the house was a lot of black, white and grey. There was some purple and red, but other than that it was all the three colours.
A gorgeous woman met them in the hallway.

She had long lashes and she was wearing purple lipstick. Her dress was tight waisted and black and paired with a blood red short jacket. She had short black hair cut into an angled bob.Wow. That was a LOT of eyeliner. She had done it perfectly too. She wore a lot of black.

'Hi Alex dear. You're little friend. Is she one of our blackies?' Alex's mom looked at Cami skeptically. Blackie? Was that a code or something. Everything was weird since Cami started at Paper Hearts.

'Um. I'm not sure.' Alex looked uncomfortable. What was she not sure about though?

〰️〰️

Blackies... blackies. What in the hell does that mean?

〰️〰️
They walked in but Alex's mom didn't look that happy now. She was looking at Cami weirdly, like she was sizing her up for something. Then they broke the gaze and cami and Alex walked along a million corridors, Alex pulling cami by the wrist like she had done when she rescued her from the crowds, except this time it was rescue from her mom.

Alex quickly dragged Cami up to her room. Again, it was all black, grey and white mostly.Alex grinned and sat down on her bed. It made a weird hollow 'thump' and Cami creased her eyebrows. Alex's grin flickered but then she relaxed again.
'Your house is amazing Alex,' sighed Cami. Alex blushed.
'Yeah well, it sorta looks like you've just walked into an old TV program.'
'I think that's cool.'
She blushed again and smiled. 'Thanks,' she said.

They started talking and didn't stop until it was six o clock.  Then Alex's mom popped her head in the door. 'Alex dear...maybe your friend-'
'Mommy no,' Alex groaned. 'What?' Cami looked really confused. Alex's mom looked pleadingly at her daughter. 'She would look so good in black.'
'Wait, you want to dress me up?' Cami asked. This was the weirdest. She'd never had her friend's mom come in the room and declare a makeover. But what could go wrong?
'Ok' she said.
'Cami, don't say I didn't warn you,' Alex said. That made Cami nervous but she followed Alex's mom along corridors again  into a massive room that looked like a salon/ boutique/makeup parlour.
'woah! this is awesome.'
'thank you Cami, i decorated the place my self actually.' There was pride in Alex's mom's voice. First Cami was sat down at a dresser. Her light hair and clothes made her look completely out of place. True she had dyed it when she was younger. it used to be black.
A bit of dust got in her eye. She blinked furiously. The contact lenses made getting stuff in her eyes even more annoying. But she didnt wear contacts because she had bad eyesight. Actually she had extra sharp senses, weirdly sharp senses. She wore the contacts because of her eye color. And nobody would ever see that, she would make sure of that.
While she was having these thoughts Alex's mum had transformed her. She was now wearing black eyeliner and pale peach lipstick.she had mascara but no blush, Alex's mom had kept her pale.
She looked pretty. Really pretty. Then Alex's mom picked up some of Cami's hair and tested it.
'It used to be black. You dyed it.' She looked disappointed. Oh please will you let me make it black again?' Cami didn't know what to say. But she was nervous. She said yes. Alex's mom clapped her hands and grinned.
It took a while but Cami's hair was back to black, and put in a messy top knot.
She was led over to the walk in closet. Alex's mom disappeared into it and came back a few minutes later with a pile of clothes. They were amazing.
A short black pleated skirt with a chain, and a black oversized tshirt with another language written on it, over the top of a black and white stripy shirt with really long sleeves. Black chunky boots with laces that clomped around and made Cami feel like her feet weighed a ton, but she got used to them. And black high socks. She felt amazing as she looked.
'Thank you,' she breathed.
'Keep it all! I don't need it.' Alex's mom was looking happier with her now.
'Seriously!' Cami gasped.
'Of course!'
'Thank you so so so so much'
Then cami realised she had to go.

She  was just about to walk out the door when she bumped into a tall thin man with a sort of grace, like Alex's mom. They looked as if they glided. It must be Alex's dad. She looked down and mumbled ' sorry' then ran out the door and called bye to Alex.
She walked home down the hill then up a hill then down another hill until she reached the bottom of the hill. She walked along the streets until she reached the gate into the massive driveway of her apartment. Then walked in with a lot of stares at her new look and took the elevator to the top floor. And opened the door then flumped on the couch.
Crookshanks slinked over and snuggled into her chest. She picked up a plate of cucumber she randomly left on the coffee table and started feeding it to him. She turned her TV on, watched 5 episodes, and fell asleep.
