Mistakes (Sully's Perspective)

I should have never knocked on your door. I didn't know what I was getting myself into. I had a single mission, go through the door and scare a kid. Simple enough.  Oh, how wrong I was.

It was a normal day. I was handed the doors to go through and scare the kids. I've been doing this for years now and scaring them had come much more easily. Only if you forget my past. Since Boo I've tried not to get too attached to the kids anymore. It's been hard, there have been times I had to have Mike restrain myself. But I get the job done and that is all that matters.

So I clocked in for work and went on to my first door, his door. It was dark brown with vines and moss growing on it. The handle looked like it had once been gold but now was unpolished and dirty. I turned it getting some sort of grease on my hand and walked in. A swamp, I should've seen that coming. I closed the door and walked onto the green moss floor. I was expecting muddy water to squish through and get my fur all wet but it was stable. This led to my first question, where was the kid?

Usually, you would walk in and just see them there sleeping, quietly walk to them and scream until they are screaming too. But here there was no kid in sight. I turned back to see if the door was still there and then I remembered. Mike was on his lunch break so there wouldn't be anyone to let me out. I remembered the 15-minute limit.  You had to scare the child in under 15 minutes and once your time was over the door would automatically open. I had two choices. One, stay here for 15 minutes until it opens or two, explore where this door had led me.

Of course, I picked option two, like a fool. I walked down a moss path following it. I stared at all of nature and held my nose from the smell. As I walked on the smell was so bad it made my eyes burn and I was about to turn back until I saw his house. It was a shack in the middle of a clearing. There I found the smell. It was an outhouse whose remains leaked into the creek next to it. I gagged so badly at just how pure disgusting this was. I didn't want to see who would live like this so I walked back hoping no one saw me. As I got back to the door I opened it thinking surely my 15 minutes were up. The door didn't open. I rattle the knob until I heard a crack and saw that the knob was crushed. I was really in trouble now. I sat down on a nearby log and waited. Soon it was night and I knew my 15 minutes were surely up by now and Mike was probably asleep.

Then it started to rain. It came down in bullets hitting me over and over again. Soon the irritation got to me and I started walking along the path. Surely if someone was repeatedly using the bathroom someone had to be living there. I was right. There was light seeping out from underneath the door. I knocked, once, twice, I was about to do it three times when the door opened.

Standing in front of me was the ugliest man I had ever seen. He was an unnatural green with small antenna-like ears sticking out. He had crusty nails and a smile so yellow it made gold look white. I regretted my decision immediately but seeing as how the rain didn't look like it was stopping anytime soon I asked him.

"May I stay the night?" I said. He smiled wide.

"Yes." I walked into his house. It was oddly big and smelled like burning fur, something I, unfortunately, knew too well. He invited me in and was strangely nice. Too nice. I kept up my guard the entire night just in case.

You let me eat dinner, rotten fish with molded cheese. You asked me question after question about who I was and why I was here. I lied to you. I didn't know you and I didn't want to know. You couldn't leave it that way, no you had to tell me every boring detail about your life. I could have written an entire series on your life just from one night.

After a few hours, you set up my bed, a chair in the corner of your room and let me sleep. I was so tired after your endless talking that I let my guard down and fell deep into sleep. I woke again at some lightning late in the night and I swore I saw you watching me. Your bug eyes kept a close watch on me. I felt invisible beetles (or I hoped they were invisible) crawling all over me. I felt unsafe and knew I had to get out at once.

The next morning I thanked you for your kindness and wished you luck in helping your friend "Donkey" learn how to make dinner for his dragon kids. I walked down the path hoping and praying the door would be open. I turned the knob but it wouldn't budge. I panicked and felt as if I was going to cry. I would be stuck here with him because this stupid, idiotic, dumb door wouldn't-

Creeeek

The door opened and there my dear best friend Mike stood. I picked him up and hugged him as tight as I could whispering thank you over and over again.

"Okay, buddy, excited to see you too." He said

"Where were you?" I said putting him down.

"Management accidentally put in a wrong door and we had to get the keys to open it."

"But why did it take so long?" I was trying to come off as sarcastic and mean but ended up sounding like I was on the verge of tears, which I was.

"Hey, I'm here now ok? Wow, this place did a number on you. It uh took us so long since Claws had misplaced them. But we are here now. let's get out of here and destroy the door ok?" I nodded my head and we walked out the door locking it forever. I turned around and everyone I knew was there, worried expressions on their faces which soon turned to cheers and smiles as they looked at me.

The rest of the night was a party for me being alive. I was so happy and so so tired. I took a shower and have never felt so clean. I promised myself that no matter what I would never go there again.   I was stuck there with a stranger who watched me sleep. I never want to experience that again.

I got into bed and looked up at Mike's bunk. A poster on the wall saying "Hang in There" with a cat on a tree. Mike always said the photo was adorable. I thought it seemed cruel for an animal to go through that just to give a motivational message to others who would ignore it. He always did say I was much more realistic than him.

"Night Mikey." There was no response, I suppose he went to sleep. I was wrong. I was awoken when the door creaked open.

"Gosh darn door." Mike's voice whispered. I tried not to make it look like I was awake to cause a whole ruckus. I looked at the clock and saw it was 3:18 am. What was he doing so late at night? Then I smelt it. The same swampy stench from the shack. My eyes widened as I slowly realized what had happened. I hoped it wasn't true, but deep down I should've known he would do this.

Mike had gone through the door after he said he would destroy it. He lied to me. But now the question that would get me into more trouble, the question that made me stay up the rest of the night, the question that would get me further into this mess.

Why would he go through the door?
