----------------------------

A few knocks made contact with the door, as Almond looked up, shocked. "What on Earthbread? Oh, great," he spat, pulling Roguefort in by the tie aggressively. "You're in deep cacao now." The other man simply smirked, rolling his eyes. "Language, detective."

Opening up the door, Almond was greeted by a short girl, presumably around the age of 15. Her hair was of a crisp shade of white, while her pale skin seemed red with the haze of fluster from running all the way to his office.

"Cream Puff Cookie? What's the problem?"

Regaining her breath, the young wizard looked up at him with desperation. "Mum- no, Latte Cookie told me to alert you of a dangerous trespasser. She says it's the notorious Phantom Bleu! She seemed really panicked, said you should be careful of any of his unwanted allies with hi- Who is that?"

Peering over to the side of Almond, she stared in horror at Roguefort as he waved at her politely.

"Uh... Almond? Y-you might want to turn around-" Almond grabbed her shoulders, forcing her out of the room with him and shutting the door with a slam. Getting down onto two knees to reach her height, he looked up at her pleadingly.

"Cream Puff." he commanded, as she flinched in fear. Taking her face by the chin and bringing her to face him, he once again said her name- this time in a gentler, hushed tone. "Cream Puff. I've got everything under control- you needn't worry. Go back to your mom, and tell her that I've sorted this all out. Clear?"

However, Cream Puff shook her head defiantly. "Don't patronise me, please! Detective Almond, you say you have everything under control, but how can I know you tell the truth?"

Sighing and massaging his temples for a moment, he looked at here with a sincere gleam in his eyes. "Young lady. I promise you that I wouldn't lie to you if it counted on the whole world's life. You know that's not part of my job, nor is it who I am. These times are rough, but we need to have faith, between everybody- regardless of age, size, power... Please, trust me, the way I can trust you." Letting go of her shoulders and standing back up, Almond brushed off his shoulders and adjusted his tie. "That is all. You're a good kid, Cream Puff," he said, lingering at the door. "Try to stick to that, okay?"

"A-Almond Cookie? ...There's another thing." Turning around, the detective looked down at a limp envelope, sealed with a periwinkle wax stamp with a name scribbled down on it. "I-I'd like you to give this to Detective Walnut, if you don't mind." Almond took the envelope with two fingers and stuffed it into his breast pocket. And, with that, he nodded at her to bid farewell, and snaked through the door.

Walking back in, Almond stretched out his arms at his desk with annoyance coursing through him, as Roguefort reclined back in his chair in mockery. "Hm? Was that a friend?" Almond deflected him with ignorance, as he stacked up his loose papers onto one side, brushed away from their piles by the two's interaction earlier. "Didn't seem like one of mine. Glared at me with the terror of all of Her Highness's victims combined-"

Standing over Roguefort, Almond grabbed a handful of his hair, pulling his head up uncomfortably to stare upwards at him. "Let's cut to the chase, pal. What affiliation do you have with the Darkness?" Roguefort weakly smirked in response, a dark glare in his eyes. "Enough to get me the jewels, no-"

Roguefort moaned out in pain as Almond tightened his grip "Bullshit. You're a good enough thief without them. What's your real motive?"

The thief smirked, his breath shaking. "You asked me this last time, detective. Do I need to answer this boring question again? Ask me other stuff, like my favourite designers, or my favourite perfume brands. I can answer those. But the answer to the your one is pretty clear," he whispered playfully, winking. "You know me so well, don't you? You've been chasing me down for years, and you never bothered to ask me for anything other than crime details and my name. This feels so one-sided, don't you think?"

Letting go of Roguefort's hair, Almond sat down on the chair facing him, the tension in the room rising. "Alright, then. What is it that you want?"

Roguefort clapped in excitement, a grin on his face. "Ah! I'd like you to put more time and dedication into our relationship."

The detective raised an eyebrow. "Relationship?"

Roguefort tucked a strand of hair behind his ear. "Yes, a relationship. Surely, someone as handsome as yourself must have experience with them, no?"

Almond sighed. "And I have to do this to extort an answer from you?"

Roguefort nodded eagerly. "Yes... and something else."

"What is it?"

The thief leaned forwards, tilting his head. "I'd like to talk to your daughter."

Leaning back, Almond glared at him. "No. And why?"

Smiling vaguely, Roguefort twirled his tie around his finger. "To see my old rival again, like good old times. You remember when you supervised her interrogation of me, don't you? When I first laid eyes upon you? Like that, no harm done," he explained, before dropping down to a whisper. "Just like paying respects to the dead."

Startled, Almond began to get up in anger, before Roguefort leaned over the table sleazily, a gloved hand extended before him. "Glad to do business with you, Mr. Almond. When do we begin?"
