Chapter Seven: The Proven Theory

Five minutes.

Five minutes of Topaz completely freaking out.

"Five minutes isn't that bad, Emma." You might think.

But did you forgot the parts where I said "freaking out" and "Topaz"?

When Topaz freaks out, one must take cover. However at the moment I did not have any cover to take, therefore I was stuck calming her down.

Doesn't ever work.

But as the five minute timer ticks, Topaz gasps and stops moving.

Aaron.

I turn my head to see him slowly getting up, coughing up a storm. When he catches sight of me and Topaz, he chokes on his own breath and pushes himself back from the sand.

Are we really doing that again?

Of course I was shocked The Human Theory was proven correct, and there was one right in front of me, I never was one to repeat myself.

Finally, Aaron gets ahold of himself, and comes closer to me with a skeptical look.

"Hi." He says, but not in the friendliest way. More like an 'I'm going to interrogate you and steal your soul' way. Not so friendly.

"Hi." I repeat, as if I was an echo. Topaz's eyes widen as she whispers something to me. "You understand it?" She says softly, and my eyebrows knit. What does she mean? I only know one language.

"What's she saying?" Aaron points to Topaz, and Topaz is once again frightened. Wait, did he just ask what she was saying? What happened to speaking similar languages?

"This is gonna take a while." I say.

____

"Really?" Aaron says, but in a curious way.

"Yeah, why does everyone thing we have kings and queens?" I tell him, baffled.

"Oh, so you aren't a mermaid princess." His voice drops, and he's disappointed from my response. You had to be kidding me. His smile comes back and he pauses for a moment, then opens his mouth.

"Hey, Emma, what do smart mermaids wear?"

Oh God no. He's been making these idiotic jokes the whole time I've been here.

"What." I groan, and he takes a deep breath before answering.

"An ALGE-BRA!" He laughs like a maniac and I roll my eyes. Too many of these jokes have been thrown at me. Too many. I think Topaz went home on the eleventh joke, saying she was scared it was going to get dark. Of course, it wasn't. I had to leave by sunset, because that's when Father got off patrol.

Before I can make a snarky remark on his pun, my eyes catch how the sun was slowly lowering, and the sky was turning orange.

"Barnacles. I gotta go, bye Aaron." I say, and before he can pull me back and ask me to stay longer, a bunch of his friends started walking towards him, calling out his name. He gives me a sincere yet disappointed smile, then turns back to his friends, and I to the ocean.

I needed to get home before Father did. Because if Father even hears a word about me sneaking out,

Well, it won't be pretty.
