A splash of blood.
Riko screams.
The sword goes through Satoru's chest with ease, as if it was cutting through the butter. My pulse skyrockets in distress.
Impossible, I thought. We're inside of the barrier, how did he-
I see the flash of a menacing grin of the man behind Satoru, and my hands move on my own. Bloor roars violently through my ears as I aim my hands at him, intending on using my cursed energy to control his own and throw him far away from Satoru, but my eyes widen in disbelief once I realize that-
Nothing happens.
I stagger back. Questions rush into my mind, confusion and shock making my throat dry up as my heart pounds in my chest. I'm unable to move for a second, feet glued to the ground, paralyzed, as I try to analyze the situation quickly as possible, but that second of my deliberation was enough for Suguru to jump in, launching a large cursed spirit in the form of a centepide right at the man.
The man jumps into the air and evades the curse before it could do any harm, and Suguru's face morphs with strain. I curse under my breath, quickly directing my hands at the spirit as I use my cursed energy to blast it further towards the man. Caught of guard, he gets swallowed by it, and the centipede falls down with a loud thud.
This will buy some time, I think to myself as I give Suguru one grateful nod, and quickly rush towards wounded Satoru.
"Satoru! Are you okay?" I call out, voice infused with panic once I see him. Satoru is hunching over, holding onto his abdomen with a pained expression, but before I could reach him, he raises his bloody hand in front of me.
"Hey, hey, I'm fine," he says, quickly putting a smile on his face. "I reinforced my cursed energy so he didn't hit any vital organs. Kinda like a safety pin though a knitted sweater. Really, I'm good," he explains in a laid-back tone as he raises slowly, and my gaze directs back to the centipede laying on the ground not so far from us, ominously shaking from the inside.
Judging by the looks of it, we don't have much time.
Satoru follows my gaze, putting his hands back into his pockets as he points at the centepide with his chin. "Got a plan, Einstein?" He asks.
I wait. And think.
"No, not really. But there's something I noticed," I say, not feeling comfortable enough to take my eyes off the curse as I speak. "My cursed technique didn't work on him. I didn't realize why at first... because that never happened before. There's not a single person or a curse that I can't control..."
At least there wasn't... until now.
Being bestowed with the ability to control anyone or anything that possesses cursed energy is something that earned me the title of 'The strongest' that I shared with Satoru, someone naturally gifted to the point people and curses feared him ever since he was born.
My technique always worked effortlessly, as long the other person or the curse didn't have more cursed energy than I did, which rarely happened. And even when it did, I developed a way to make it work.
But this right now... this is not the same.
This is something different...
Something worse.
