A Dream

You were a dream.
The first time I saw you it seemed like time stopped.
Your eyes filled with warmth,
As well as your smile.
You were ethereal.
How could I look away?
Even the rest of this world knew how mesmerizing you were.

You were a dream.
A dream that can only be seen in photos.
The ones that your parents would show everyone.
The same ones that would always embarrass you.
I've  taken down my photos of you,
Because I hate looking at your smile,
Knowing that I'll never see it again in person.
I hid them away in a box under my bed.
The same box full of the letters you sent me.

You were a dream.
One who's name is rarely ever spoken.
Even your parents barely say it anymore.
And when they do, their voices get soft and quiver.
I  also refuse to utter your name,
Because I know you'll never answer.

You were a dream.
That really was my first thought when we met.
Every moment we spent together felt like a dream.
A dream that I never wanted to end.
Now I can't even watch videos of us anymore.
My mind has replaced the sound of your laugh with the sounds of flatlines.

You were a dream.
Ethereal.
Beautiful.
And kind.
How could any of us look away?

This world loved you.
I loved you.
And now, you're a memory.
A memory nobody can bear.
