It was a slow day, like always. Nobody ever came to the convenience store y/n worked at. This was probably because it wasn't the nicest store, nor was it the cleanest. But their job there allowed them to earn a large enough salary to pay for their small one-bedroom apartment. So, they sat at the cash register, waiting for someone to walk into the store.

However, no one did. There they sat, all day long, for hours no end, and not one single customer.

"Damn," they thought. "It's usually slow around here but never this bad. This place will probably be out of business before the year ends."

Closing time was soon, and the owner of the shop, Earl, started getting his things together so he could leave. Earl was a hard-working man, probably in his late 40s. Y/n felt bad for him, he tried so hard to keep up with the store, and with the two of them being the only employees, even that was tough. Everyone else quit after business there started to slow down.

"y/n?" He called cautiously. "Yes sir?" They responded. He walked out from behind the shelf he was removing candy from. "I know you've seen how bad the store has been doing lately, so I've decided. I'm closing the shop soon."

They knew it was coming, but they hadn't expected it so soon. "Oh..." Y/n said quietly. "I really am sorry, but you've seen how bad it's been lately, and there's no use in trying to save it." He said quickly.  y/n looked down. "I understand, but how soon?" He sighed. "Next week I'm clearing out the shop. I can give you your last paycheck today and then you can leave." Y/n again felt bad for the man. "No, I can stick around and help out." He smiled at them. "Thank you."

So, the two of them spent the rest of the week getting things ready to shut down. It was rather sad, Y/n worked there for a little more than a year. Clearing out the store wasn't as difficult as they thought it would be. They had sold the icee machines to a bowling alley in the city, the items that weren't sold in the super sale they had were thrown out.

One thing was left, a lottery scratch ticket. "Hey, um, sir?" Y/n said. "Yes?" The owner of the store came up to them. "There's a lottery ticket here, should I throw it away or-" "No," He cut them off. "Keep it. Who knows? You may win." They didn't think any more of what he told them and shoved the ticket in the pocket of their jacket. "Well, guess this is goodbye, thanks for all the help y/n," Earl said to them as he handed them their last paycheck. "Thank you, Mr. Earl." They said smiling as they exited the store.

They felt the cool wind across their face as they left the store, the type of breeze you only feel during summer nights. Y/n got into their car and attempted to start up the car. The engine sputtered, and they feared that this would be the long-awaited day where the actually just died and stopped working, but it started up eventually.

Y/n had had the car for years, ever since they graduated high school a few years ago. It was a hand me down from their older brother. The car was small and cramped, but having to find a new job means they won't be getting a new one for a while.

The ride home was uneventful, the streets were strangely uncrowded, so it only took about 6 or seven minutes for Y/n to get back to their apartment. The apartment they lived in was like their car, small and cramped. They wanted to go to college, and get a good job to be able to pay for the nice lifestyle they had always dreamed of.

They entered their apartment and set their bag and took off their jacket to hang it up on the back of a chair. Y/n walked into their kitchen and wondered what they were going to eat for dinner. They soon decided on just eating the leftovers of their favorite food, (idk whatever you want) which they had eaten the night before. They were pretty hungry, so they had eaten all of their food quickly. After that they were pretty tired, so they decided to just rest and watch some TV for a while.

After watching some TV, they were pretty much ready to go to bed. Y/n's tired eyes scanned across the room and landed on their jacket. They got up and reached into the pocket of their coat, and pulled out the lottery ticket. It was one of the scratch-off ones with six spaces and if you got the same icon in all six you won the jackpot, and the jackpot was... a million dollars?! "Jeez," Y/n thought to themself "that's a whole lotta money." There was no possible way they could even dream of winning that much money, there's a chance they could win 10 bucks or another free ticket, but never a jackpot that big.

Even with their doubts, who knows? They'd never know what they could've won if they didn't try. So, they grabbed their wallet and looked for a coin, but there wasn't one to be found. So they moved on, looking through the cabinets, drawers, even the couch cushions. But they couldn't find any change. "You know what? screw it" Y/n said aloud as they started to scratch off the circles with their nail.

Stars. All six spaces on the cards had a star in them. They won a million dollars! How? This couldn't be real. They had to be dreaming! Y/n read over the guidelines and instructions, and they really had won! What could they even do with all of that money? Go on a vacation, buy a whole new wardrobe, go to the best college in the world, get a new and flashy car, open a store... opportunities were limitless. As more and more thoughts over luxury and richness flooded their mind, one idea stuck out. Moving.

They've always wanted to move. This crowded city has never been ideal to Y/n. Frankly, they hated living here. The city was always full of polluted air, covered in trash, and most of the people who lived there were also trash. Moving was a good idea, but where? Maybe to the suburbs. Or to a beach town? Los Angles, maybe? No, too big.

"Oh god," Y/n thought. "what do I do now?".
