Lukas was 11 years old when he first saw the dark-haired boy at school. His gray eyes and bright smile were captivating, and the first thought that crossed Lukas' mind was, "He's magnetic." Lukas immediately wanted to catch the boy's attention, hoping he would look his way.
His father leaned in slightly and whispered, "That is Jonas Spencer. His father's business is starting to do well."
Lukas nodded, thrilled that his father was encouraging this connection. "Understood, Father."
He let go of his father's hand, walked up to Jonas, and extended his own. "Hello, I'm Lukas."
Jonas flashed him a warm smile and shook his hand. "Hi, Lukas. You can call me Joey."
'Joey' seemed to fit him perfectly, as lighthearted as he was. Everything about him was extraordinary. He encouraged others and showed an uncanny kindness, naturally leading people even at a young age. Although only 11, Jonas displayed a maturity and awareness of the world that resonated deeply with Lukas.
Lukas began spending more and more time with Jonas, often finding excuses to invite him to his house. What started as casual hangouts soon became something Lukas eagerly anticipated. Lukas found himself loosening the tight grip his father's expectations had on him, allowing himself to laugh a little louder and be a little freer when he was with Jonas.
But as their friendship deepened, something shifted in Lukas. He began to study Jonas more closely—not just enjoying his company but becoming acutely aware of every small change in his demeanor. It wasn't enough to simply be around Jonas; Lukas wanted to understand every facet of him. Over time, Jonas started revealing personal things about himself—small details no one else noticed. Lukas took note of each one, cataloging them in his mind like precious secrets.
It was the way Jonas' smile would falter ever so slightly when certain topics came up or how his eyes would darken with a flicker of something deeper when he thought no one was watching. Lukas became attuned to these moments, his heart racing each time he caught a glimpse of the emotions Jonas tried to keep hidden. He began to crave these moments, feeling a thrill in knowing that he understood Jonas in ways no one else did.
When Jonas got angry, it was usually subtle—just a tightening of his jaw or a quick clenching of his fists. But Lukas noticed. He always noticed. And each time, he felt a strange satisfaction in being the one who could see beyond Jonas' calm exterior. Lukas began to view these moments as something meant just for him as if Jonas was unknowingly offering him pieces of himself that no one else could have.
The more Jonas opened up, the more Lukas wanted. He started to feel an almost desperate need to be the person Jonas confided in, the one who could soothe him when he was upset or share in his rare moments of vulnerability. Lukas told himself it was because they were friends that he was just being supportive. But deep down, he knew it was more than that. He was becoming consumed by the idea of knowing everything about Jonas, of being the one who could truly understand him.
The bond between them, once a source of comfort, began to feel more like a thread that tied Jonas to him—a thread Lukas was increasingly desperate to tighten. He found himself growing irritated whenever Jonas spent time with others or when someone else made him laugh. Lukas wanted to be the center of Jonas' world, just as Jonas had unknowingly become the center of his own.
