Jonas, who had retreated into a shell of himself for an entire year, was almost overwhelmed by Travis. He was small, but his personality and enthusiasm for conversation were quite large.

"So you're new here? As a senior?"

Jonas nodded with a slight grunt.

"Man, that must be rough. Don't worry, though. It's not as bad as the rumors. I mean, I did see about two fights this morning and then the three stooges you encountered, but it's not all that bad. Just find a good group of friends, and you're set. Are you at the dorms?"

Another nod from Jonas.

"Awesome! Me too. Been there my whole high school career. I wouldn't have it any other way. We have some really good times in the dorm. Wow! Your hair is pretty long."

Jonas was surprised by the change of subject. He didn't know if he could keep up with this ball of energy. He ran a hand through his hair. It had gotten long, and he needed to consider doing something about it.

"I'm pretty good with styling. I cut most of the boys' hair in the dorms. We tend to save money that way, so if you would like, I can trim yours up."

Jonas shrugged. Travis didn't seem to mind his noncommittal attitude and happily continued the conversation. Although it was a lot, Jonas didn't mind. He appreciated someone his age talking to him without fear or judgment.

They soon made their way to the classroom, and Travis led him to some seats towards the back.

The seats were getting filled, and a group of guys loudly crashed through the door laughing. Travis waved to them, and they all sat around him, giving Jonas a cautious look. Jonas didn't bother with them and pulled out Stephen King's The Shining and started to read.

"Travis, did those assholes mess with you again this morning?" One of the boys asked.

Travis shrugged. "They tried. Luckily... um..." He tapped on Jonas' shoulder with a bright blush, which caused Jonas to give him a questioning look. "I never got your name."

Jonas chuckled, seeing the flustered look on his face. "Jonas." His voice was low and deep, drawing the attention of the others around him.

His legal name seemed unfamiliar as he said it. For so many years, he had introduced himself as Joey. The nickname was lighthearted and matched his fun-loving character when he was younger. But the name Joey was a bitter memory, so he was glad to be rid of it.

Travis brightened. "Jonas helped me out."

One of the guys patted Jonas on the shoulder, seemingly excited for a new friend. He was tall and a little lanky but was still good-looking, with pale skin and sandy blonde hair cut close to his head.

"Thanks, man. We try to watch each other's back, but we lost sight of Travis for a moment. I'm Jaiden."

Another kid with olive skin and long black hair tied back held out his hand. He had a stocky build and thick arms. "Millan." Jonas shook his hand with a nod.

The last boy was leaning back in his chair and looking Jonas up and down. Jonas' eyes lingered on him. His hair was dyed silver, and he had dark green eyes, which looked striking against his bronzed skin. He had a strong jawline that led up to a long chain earring hanging from one ear. He was sitting casually on a desk, but Jonas could tell he had a strong build similar to his.

Jonas' gaze moved towards his fingers. They looked long and delicate, but his knuckles were scarred like Jonas. Too many fights could cause those scars, which intrigued him.

He was pure temptation.

That thought jarred Jonas. He had never felt such a strong attraction towards anyone before and tried to dismiss the sensation. But it was visceral, and he barely managed to maintain a composed expression.
