*JASLENE POV*
I walked down the aisle of the candy shop, stopping at my favorites; Swedish fish. Quickly taking a cautious glance to see if anybody was looking, I hurriedly grabbed the candy off the hook, storing it deep inside my jacket. Scanning down the rack, I picked up the sour gummy worms I was looking for. After sliding that in my jacket too, I headed for the exit.
I've done this loads of times, so this was nothing new to me. Walking out the store, I headed down the street, taking the familiar left turn as I spotted my sister Vanessa waiting for me. Once she saw me, a smile spread across her face. She turned around as I handed her the gummy worms I took, & continued to walk with me.
I'm Jaslene. Jaslene Morgan. Known mostly as Jas, Jazzy, or 'the Kleptomaniac'. All I do is steal. I see something I want, I grab it, ya feel me? Why pay for something when you can get it for free is how I see it. Thing is, I wasn't always this way. 3 years ago, I was considered the goody two shoes along with my twin sister, but all that changed when my mother passed away. As much as I tried to change, I couldn't do it, neither could Vanessa. Our dad sent us off to live with our Aunt Daphne after I stole $100 out of the stack hidden in his bedroom. When our dad found out Nessa used that money to buy weed, he wanted nothing to do with us anymore.
Wasn't like he did shit for us, period.
"Jas, there's a party at Richard's tonight, you down?", Vanessa asked, putting the candy in her bag.
I sucked my teeth, grimacing at my sister. "Why you always trying to go to some damn party? Just chill a little bit. Spend some nights in".
You thought I was bad? Meet my sister. She smokes & sells weed, sneaks out to a party almost every damn weekend (she always makes me cover for her), & she's the most deceptive liar you'll ever meet. If Vanessa wanted to, she could pursue a career in acting because she can sure fool anybody.
"A simple 'no' would have done", Ness replied, rolling her eyes as we turned into the drive of our aunt's house. She started fumbling around in her side bag for her key as I crossed my arms.
"Seriously though Nessa, stop going to these parties all the time, they're no good".
"Ah, shut up with that mess", she snapped, inserting the key in the lock & turning. "If I want to go to a party & get out, I will".
I pinched the bridge of my nose, inhaling slowly. I swear this girl has brick in her ears.
"How much 'getting out' do you ne-", I was cut off by Vanessa turning around & signaling me to be quiet, jerking her head towards our aunt cooking in the kitchen.
"We won't be discussing this anymore", she whispered quickly to me before saying hello to Aunt Daphne & going upstairs.
I mentally threw my hands up in frustration before giving my aunt a kiss on the cheek & a hug. I walked upstairs & saw that Vanessa's door was wide open. Peeking inside, I saw Vanessa lying flat on her back with her laptop resting on her stomach. Continuing on to my own room, I kicked the door closed behind me & flopped onto my bed. The candy inside my jacket crumpled, reminding me of my crime. Many nights, I'd backtrack & think of how me & my twin sister became the criminials we are. Boy, do people change.
