After everyone had settled down, Professor McGonagall (whom I affectionately call Minnie) began the sorting ceremony.

"Robinson Daisy!" A nervous first-year stumbled towards the stool and sat down, gripping it tightly.

"HUFFLEPUFF!" My housemates and I cheered and clapped as the first-year happily joined our table.

"Valentine Christy!"

"SLYTHERIN!"

 "Robinson Thomas!"

"HUFFLEPUFF!" I saw Daisy Clapp heartily as her brother slipped next to her.

After a few more, the sorting ceremony was officially over. Then, Headmaster Dumbledore stood up to make an announcement. "The very best of evenings to you!... Now, to our new students, welcome. To our returning students, welcome back! Another year full of magical education awaits you..." "Now, our caretaker Mr Filch," Dumbledore said, pointing to the scruffy-looking caretaker, "has asked me to remind you for the four hundred and seventy-first time that the Forbidden Forest is strictly off-limits to anyone who does not wish to die the most painful death."

The first years looked between themselves 'What have we gotten ourselves into'.

"Let the feast begin!" Dumbledore said and waved his hands.

And suddenly plates after plates began to pile up with food.

I glanced towards the Gryffindor table, where Ron was eating- more like dumping chicken after chicken in his mouth.

My gaze wandered towards the Slytherin table where I saw some sophisticated-looking people. Even children looked noble and remarkably disciplined.

And then I saw him. Draco Malfoy. My first crush, I don't have a crush on him anymore, of course, ever since he used the 'm' word to Hermione.

I quickly looked away from him and started chatting with my friend, Ernie Macmillan. Ernie and I have been friends since first year and some might mistake us as a couple. But let me tell you. We are not.

"So how did your holidays go?" Ernie asked helping himself with some treacle tart.

I hesitated, my body shaking slightly but I quickly regained my composure.

"Just the same as every year, eating, sleeping, reading, eating and sleeping again." I lied.

"Well, my summer has been great! I got about 5 acceptables in my O.W.Ls and received a 5-hour lecture from my parents! And guess what, I was grounded for the entire summer!" Ernie said giving a dramatic sigh.

"A few more months in my house and I swear I would have forgotten how the sky looks like." He said.

"You and your dramatic arse, I swear," I muttered shaking my head.

"Being dramatic is a skill bestie" he said giving me a wink.

I chuckled at that.

Just when everything was going perfectly, she came.

"Hey, Bea!" Jessica shrieked.

I sighed.

"Jessica, how many times should I tell you not to call me Bea," I said without looking at her.

"Anyways, I'm hosting a back-to-school party at the Hufflepuff common room at 6, want to join? though I got to warn you, it's only for cool people" She asked with a smug look on her face thinking she trapped me. If I say no, she would use that on me for weeks telling people I'm not cool. As much as I wish I could ignore it, I can't. Then I smiled as I knew the perfect answer.

"As much as I would love to come, I'm not cool, I'm better, so I can't join..." I said with a sigh.

She rolled her eyes and left.

Ernie gave out a Hearty laughter.

"Serves her right! Anyways did you hear? Snape's the new defense against the dark arts teacher!" he said with a miserable look plastered on his face.

"What! That's it, Dumbledore's gone crazy." I said.

"Tell me about it." Ernie muttered.

The night was surprisingly peaceful at the girls' dorm. I sat by the window, gazing at the breathtaking view of the stars above Hogwarts. There was a certain magic in the air that made Hogwarts feel like a second home to me. It made me angry to think that Voldemort and his Death Eaters were trying to destroy something so beautiful. Why would someone want to do that?

I had so many questions to ask, but I couldn't find the courage to ask them. Suddenly, Susan mumbled in her sleep, "Do you think this lipstick goes well with my undertone?" I smiled, realizing that some things are worth protecting.

I turned back to the window, feeling excited about the year ahead. I had a feeling that it was going to be a great year.
