I was astonished. That's an understatement. I was bewildered! The boy, Aspen, seemed to be holding light. It wasn't a sphere or a ray of light; it was just light.
Could people normally create light with their hand? As I looked down at my own two hands, I decided that I wasn't able to do that. I didn't know a lot, but I was pretty sure that I would have known if I could spontaneously create light.
I looked up into his well lit, smiling, face. He knew what I was thinking. What? How? He chuckled and said, "I'll explain it to you later. Just don't touch it. It'll hurt you."
I had been about to put my hand at the center of the light right as he said it. I pulled back, but I didn't want to. I was drawn to it. I needed it.
He held one hand out in front of him, and all of the light jumped into that hand. He started to walk again, and he said, "Not much farther now. Just stay close to me." That wouldn't be hard. The luminous form seemed to pull my body forward. Why couldn't I touch it?
I followed him, and he was right. It, whatever it was, came into view. There were tons of little moving forms all illuminated by tall tree shaped things. The only difference being that these only had one brach a piece. There were also some various geometrically shaped objects that were much bigger that the moving forms.
We picked up the pace. At this point I was very happy that I had gone with Aspen. That is to say, I was happy that he had given me no choice. My excitement picked up as we neared our destination. Suddenly my feet hit something that was defiantly not dirt and grass. It seemed like a bunch of similar rectangular rocks all put in lines. We had emerged front the forest. We had made it!
................................................................
None of it felt real. It was all out in the open. I liked it, but at the same time it felt vunerable. It made me want to go back into the forest. Nervous excitement. That's what I decided I was feeling. Aspen noticed that I was shrinking back into the shadows. He extinguished the light, grabbed my hand, and pulled me forward. We we walked down the path made of lined up stones. I kept watching the other people. There were males and females of all different shapes, sizes, and colors. I started comparing them to myself. I was paler, tinier, and weaker looking than almost of the female ones, and all of the male ones. Aspen, on the other hand, was just as tall if not taller than almost everyone. He also looked just as strong as everyone. Aspen had skin that I supposed was like mine underneath a golden tint.I looked him over as he lead me to wherever we were going, and decided that I thought he was beautiful. I started to blush as I became keenly aware of how much I liked the feeling of his hand in mine. It felt like an energy was flowing from his hand into mine. This made me feel strong.
Finally, we stopped in front of one of the geometric figures. it was very tall, with rectangular holes covering it. The holes went four up, and eight across. We entered it, and I was lead up an incline, and past many brown rectangles with bits of metal on one side. We stopped at the one at the end, and Aspen pulled out a long, jagged piece of metal, and inserted it into the circular piece of metal. There was a clicking noise, and the rectangle swung open to reveal what appeared to be a small living space. Aspen said, "Sorry it's not much right now. We'll work on getting you fully situated tomorrow after we figure out what you can do."
What I can do? Situated? Was I going to stay here? He continued, "There's a bed, a table, chair, and a dresser. There should be a change of clothes for you in the dresser. I didn't know what size you would be, so I'm sorry if they're a bot big." He looked embarrassed after the last statement.
He handed me the piece of metal and said, "Here's your key. Just stay in your room for tonight. If you have to ummm... go..." he said sheepishly, "the bathroom is two doors down. My room is right across the hall if you need me." He turned to walk out the "door" but stopped and turned. "Oh, and welcome to Raynier." He ran his hands through his hair, and looked at me one last time. His eyes seemed to linger, then suddenly, he walked out the door.I was alone in the dark. I decided to not change my clothes even though they were dirty. Wasn't worth the effort. I walked over to the bed in my too loose, dirty clothes, and lay down. It felt soft, and I was tired. I hadn't realized how tired I was until I was laying down. After that it didn't take long for me to drift off.
This was defiantly a dream. I was in the forest, and all of the trees were bare. I felt bad for them. I wanted to help them, so I put my hand on either side of one of the trees. The tree started to bud, and grow leaves instantly. Then, all the tree grew leaves. In fact, they started to look even healthier than the ones in the forest where I had appered. Even the grass, and other plants, got bigger and stronger. It made me feel happy. I was powerful.
I woke up. There was bright light streaming through the rectangle in my wall. A beam of light hit my face, and I felt its energy surge through me. Then I realized that there was something different about my room. There were tree branched coming through the rectangle, and vines all along the walls.
I jumped out of bed, and screamed. I heard someone running, and Aspen burst through the door. He looked disheveled with his hair going everywhere, and a shirt put on backwards in his hurry to get to my room. His breathing turned from labored and panicked, to easy and relieved. He smiled and said, "Well that was easy. I guess we know what your skill is."AUTHORS NOTE:
