Beth's POV
--
-
"I had a great time getting to know you guys," I said.
Quinn grinned slightly but then started faintly crying.
"What's wrong??" I asked.
"I just, I missed you so much," she uttered. We locked eyes. "I should've been there," she continued painfully.
I sighed, "No don't say that, you were just focused on your career, I get it. It's not like I needed you, though I would've liked you around."
"But I needed you," Quinn whispered. "Do you know how hard it is, spending every second wondering what your child is doing, what she looks like, if she remembers you? I don't have friends. Not real ones at least, except for a few mutuals. I just wish I had held my daughter closer."
I was speechless. I didn't know what to say, so I just wrapped my birth mother into a giant hug, which made her cry even more. And I eventually found myself teary- eyed as well.
"I should've stayed with you"
"Stop it, Quinn, it's okay," I assured her.
We parted and made eye contact through our runny makeup. I threw my eyes over in Puck's direction and noticed he had some tears rolling down his cheeks as well. I ran over to him and embraced him with every bit of love I had.
"Last time I saw you, you were just bigger than the size of Quinn's stomach," Puck started. Quinn cocked her head at this and I furrowed my brow.
"And now you're taller than her."
I glanced at Quinn and saw her giving a soft smile, which I gladly returned.
"Shelby's here," Puck announced after a few more seconds.
"Oh yeah," I said, watching my mom trot over. She was still a block or two away though.
"So... What happens now?" I asked, not wanting this to end.
Puck sighed. "I don't know. I mean, we can keep in touch over phone and email of course."
I nodded, but I wanted something more. I have grown to love these people over the past couple of days. There's no way I could live my life across the country from them.
I was about to say something when I heard my mom saying my name excitedly. I turned in her direction.
"Hi Beth!" She waved.
Suddenly my eyes widened. I tried to scream but but no sound emerged.
"MOM," I uttered with all of my might.
All of a sudden I felt like the whole world was in slow motion, yet everything was happening so fast.
A grey Subaru Forester slammed on its breaks, throwing itself on my mother. The sound of honking cars and breaking glass filled my ears. I was frozen in silence. I stood, watching as the large car tumbled over my mothers body, compressing her underneath its heavy weight.
I feel sick to my stomach and my head is pounding. I hears yelps from my mother and quickly turn away. Nearby I see Quinn and Puck, mortified and stuck in a shocked frame.
The crash nears a close, and my gaping mouth trembles. I turn towards Quinn and suddenly my legs collapse underneath me. Quinn and Puck run over to me.
"Call her an ambulance," I say through a worn out breath.
Quinn nods and Puck already begins dialing.
By now I am completely lying down in the middle of a sidewalk. Nearby residents and people sitting at the resturaunt exchange glances and shocked looks. Some are on the phone with the police, some are even beginning to stand.
I hear sirens in the distance, but I just close my teary eyes. Quinn places her hand on my shoulder, comforting me in a motherly way. But I didn't want her motherly touch. Not now. I wanted my mother's touch. My real mother. Where is she?
