Max took a couple steps backward, intaking her charming little set up. She'd lain a lavender blanket along a tranquil patch of soft, fresh grass. A bottle of lemony soda stood accompanied by a plaid basket of sweet treats and refreshments sat tidily on the cloth; a sugary aroma oozing from the sight.

Would adding flowers be weird?

Would Kate take it the wrong way?

Max broke her eyes from her picnic which settled into the flora beneath, and studied the area surrounding her. Reaching into her side bag, Max curled her fingers around the cold metal of a lantern handle. Max looked toward the sky, spotted with thin bubblegum wisps of clouds and a sombre shade of purple painting itself between stars. Max flicked a thick plastic switch on the lantern, briefly filling the silence with a swift 'click', and watched the light splash over everything, casting dim shadows that danced as Max carried the lantern onto the blanket.

"Max?" The familiar voice tossed Max's thoughts and nerves into one and she whirled around, met with Kate's enchanting display.

Max let her eyes glance at Kate's attire. She wore denim overalls over a white shirt, and her hair was thrown into a loose bun. Max, on the other hand, freaked out about what to wear and ended up wearing her generic jeans and a loose-fitting yellow t-shirt with the word 'Seattle' in white near the collar. Kate stood with one of her hands tucked behind her back, and Max couldn't help but wonder why.

"Kate! Hi," Max tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, "um, you look nice." She breathed a smile and Kate subtly played with a loose thread on her thigh using her one visible hand, smiling gingerly.

Kate glanced over Max's shoulder to see the awaiting picnic, being greeted with a candied redolence.

"Woah, you did all this? Max, this is amazing," Kate felt her face redden at the thought of Max going to such lengths for her.

"I wanted tonight to be nice," Max smiled as she took Kate's hand and led her to the fabric, sitting down opposite her, both their legs crossed, knees almost touching.

Maybe I should have added flowers-- but that would be too romantic for Kate's liking. She wouldn't want this to feel like some kinda date-

"I know it's not much, I mean, compared to all this but," Kate unveiled her hand to show a bouquet of pastel pink and yellow flowers. "I just thought I should get you something, I hope it's not weird or anything I jus-"

"Breathtaking," was all Max could manage to say without completely losing her shit and pouring her heart out.

Kate smiled, happy to know Max liked her gift.

But Max wasn't looking at the flowers.

Ok- step it up Max

"The flowers are really beautiful too," Max gleamed. Kate's expression was blank, like the motors in her brain had seized up. But then a light went off, and Max watched her face glow red in the dim light of the lantern and the sliver of gold the sun hung in the sky. Kate set the flowers aside, grasping Max's hands, and leaned in, pecking Max on the cheek, who's face had turned a similar shade. Both girl's hearts ached for more, savouring every moment and second the girls shared in that moment. Their fingers were entangling as the two immersed themselves in eachothers eyes.

And just like that, Max broke her hands away, making Kate's eyes dim ever so slightly with panic, and moved them to Kate's neck, pulling her in and striking her lips with her own.

Woah

The two girls pulled apart after no more than 3 seconds. The kiss was short, sweet, and most of all- meaningful.

Neither of them had to state their feelings, they could tell by the way they looked so dreamily at eachother after. Max felt as if she'd been hit by a boulder of clumsy smitten feelings which pushed her to fall way harder for Kate, and Kate herself couldn't be happier.

They beamed at each other, their hands once again resting together.

"So, what smells so good?" Kate turned her attention to the basket.

Max chuckled, softly kissing Kate's nose before dragging the basket between them.

"Well.."
