IF YOU DARE

love thy neighbor...

When we talk about love,
What comes to mind?
A couple
Perhaps, a family
Aah, children
Yes children
They love without a care
Nativity, you might say
Too young
Too foolish
Too gullible
Too loving is what you should call it

We search for peace,
Understanding
But we search amongst ourselves
We who know not how to love
We measure love by pain and sacrifice
The greater the pain, the grander the love
Who came up with that!
It's time to style up
Look at the little ones
Full of unconditional love
Be like them if you dare

Their simplicity and purity baffles me
Exuding innocence long lost to our aged souls
We call it " experience"
The loss of trust, unconditional love
Replaced with self-centredness and egocentrism
Relationships turned into a competition of who cares less
Because that is the way of the world
That is the way to survive
Lest you become prey
A feast to the predators
And lose in the game of life

But they
They run around in the fields, without a care in the world
They see neither status nor gender
They live for the thrill
Encircled in their little bubble
Until the world comes
Pin prick in hand
And pops them back to reality
Where they are taught how to 'live'
Love no one
Trust no one
Then narcissism becomes the order of the day
And the cycle continues.
