I can't believe that happened

i cant believe that this bakery gets away with things

  This event happened years ago to me and just recently  a friend of my family. when I was old enough for a job I decided  to apply  to a bakery  that was always hiring (I thought it was due to college kids leaving for real jobs). This bakery was in walking distance so perfect for a college student wanting to earn money. After applying  the bakery ended up calling me for an interview and I was excited a job walking distance from my house. I agree to the interview  and everything went well. The bakery wanted to try me out for the job. They said they don't  pay you for first day of training and if you work out they will ask you back and keep you on. Well I showed up early worked hard for the shift so they would ask me back and I would have a job.
    
    They did ask me back the next day and I took that as I got the job. Well since I was asked back they showed me how to use the punch clock the next day (I would have been paid) when the bakery phone rang. It was the boss saying  to send me home they have another potential  employee  and they have a one trainee per a day rule (meaning  they only have one potential employee per a day in training). They apologized for the inconvenience but said if I got the job I will get a phone call. I never got the call and the help wanted sign stayed in the window. A few days later my parents and I figured out with the various clues left from the experience  the bakery  is conning free labor out of people.

  We couldn't help people by reporting  it  because they  are smart enough to not have a paper trail with written policies so it would be my word against theirs and they do remove the signs for a month or 2 before putting them out again. Also since than they had some legal problems for hiring undocumented people. Well fast forward  to 2021 they added a cafe and are hiring  people. A family friends father said his son just  got a job with them i immediately warned the father of the scam. The father brushed it off saying they know someone there. Still uneasy i warned the son who too kit seriously. Turns out they did the same thing to him as well.
