What a beautiful moon, Idris thought. A blood moon, the radio presenter had said, just before it broke down, along with her car. A blessing in disguise, because who knows where she would have been and she might have missed this beautiful phenomenon in the sky.
With a slight pinkish shine and so low on the horizon that she could almost touch it. It seemed that if she got out of her car now and just walked straight ahead, she could step right onto it.
The perfect start to a horror movie, she thought as she pulled her coat a little closer around her. She had no idea where she was or how far from civilisation, and there was no one to look out for her. The car battery and her mobile phone were both flat as a dime and she was stranded in the middle of a forest.
It seemed the most logical thing to do was to stay in her car. But as darkness set in, the moon rose and the sounds of the night began to echo, she began to doubt her sanity. Shouldn't she have just stayed at home? No, she thought firmly. She had to find her sisters.
She had not expected that her little Toyota, which had been in service for years, would suddenly break down. She always took good care of it, but she didn't have the money to get the car serviced regularly.
Lost in thought, she kept staring at the moon. The ideal moment for a weather...
Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the window. With a small scream, she turned to the cause of the sound. A half-naked savage stood beside her car.
A handsome savage, she thought. The man signalled her to lower her window. She wound the window down a fraction so that she could feel a little fresh air, but not enough for him to stick his finger in. Idris had read somewhere that even a small slit was enough to break into a car, and at the moment she didn't really feel like sharing her limited space with anyone, not even a half-naked man, however handsome he was.
"Got lost?" the man asked.
"No, I'm just enjoying the view. My boyfriend has gone for help and should be back any minute," she lied, hiding her nervousness with a smile.
The man snorted and said, "I don't smell a boyfriend, just you." He looked at her inquiringly. "You smell familiar. Have I met you before?"
She ignored the strange comment about how she smelled and only responded to his question. "No, I think I would remember. I don't make it a habit of breaking down in the middle of a forest so that handsome savages can come and rescue me."
"Handsome savage?" the man said with a laugh. "I have been called many things, but not that. I'm the sheriff of Grantvil which is just down the road. I can call the garage to come and collect your car?"
"That's exactly what a serial killer would say too. Proof of identity please," she said sternly. She'd seen enough Criminal Minds to know you can't just trust nice strangers.
"I don't have that with me now. As you can see, I'm not exactly dressed as a sheriff," he said, gesturing at his appearance. His dirty feet were bare and the only garment he wore was a pair of shabby sweatpants that were as dirty as his feet.
"Where's your mobile phone then? If you want to call the garage, you have your phone with you, right?"
A slow smile formed on his mouth, "Ah now you have me. Indeed, I don't have my mobile with me either, but the garage is already aware of the need for hoisting."
"How?" asked Idris suspiciously.
"Telepathy," he whispered.
Yup, nutcase, she thought, turning the window closed again with a smile. She reached into the bag next to her to look for her pepper spray and as soon as she found it, she triumphantly showed it to the man.
The man just shook his head and smiled. Armed with her pepper spray, she felt a little better, but Idris knew that if the man really had evil intentions, he could have done something long ago.
After what seemed like an eternity, she suddenly saw headlights appear. Her heart jumped. A tow truck!
Out of the truck emerged a man as attractive as the half-naked "sheriff". He chatted and gave something to the "sheriff" who turned and walked to her car. He pressed the badge against the window so that she could clearly read the word Sheriff and a serial number. The badge looked real, as far as she could tell of course. This was the first time she had seen a Sheriff's badge in real life and not on TV.
She opened the window a fraction again. "What was the name of the town again?"
The sheriff smiled, the man from the tow truck had also given him a shirt to put on so at least he was more presentable. "Grantvill", he said.
She had never heard of it, but she didn't know the area, so it could be real. In the end, she didn't have many options but to go along with the two handsome men and hope for the best.
She got into the truck with her pepper spray still in her hand. The men both chuckled and shook their heads, as if the pepper spray would do them no harm. The sheriff introduced himself as Beta Lucas and the other man as Sam.
Lucas was a middle-aged man with long hair and a long beard that covered half his face, and Sam looked a little older than her 25 years and had tousled blond locks.
Sam snorted lightly and looked at her out of the corner of his eye. "You smell familiar."
Idris rolled her eyes. If that was the only flirtation the, admittedly handsome, men of Grantvil had, they couldn't count on much success with the women.
