It happened when I was 18 years old. A flash of light, the sound of a horn, then crash. Darkness. Next thing I knew I was on the cold concrete, the sound of people shouting and sirens drowning my senses.

Warm hands touched my face, my wrist and shined a light in my eyes. To check my pupils I suppose but I didn’t care. The voices around me began to separate and became clearer. They asked me my name and if I was hurting anywhere. I replied the best I could but only one thing was on my mind. I asked them the question I needed to know, but they refused to answer. I asked and asked but they told me to calm down while they take me to the hospital. After that I stayed silent and though it felt like hours, it had only been a few minutes since I regained consciousness. The voices were saying I needed to be put on a stretcher, even though I was certain I could walk.

As I waited, I turned my head slightly to the right. It was at that moment my question was answered. Covered with a sheet was the body of my brother. That was when I blacked out again, and this time I didn’t wake up.
