It's 11:00 pm and I'm busy working on a project for history and I am so tired. My name is Elizabeth Diaz and I'm a student at San Diego High School. I have two younger brothers and a twin sister. My twin and I have been at each other's throats for as long as we can remember. We got into a really bad fight back when we were in middle school. I was left with a bad scar on my arm and she was left with one on her left leg.
An hour later, I finished my part of the project so I got ready to go to bed. I change my clothes into PJs, brush my teeth, and go lay down.
As I lay in bed, I turned over to see that it is 1:26 am. I turn back to look up at the ceiling, closing my eyes, but not feeling tired. Then I heard faint knocking. I sit up and I don't see anything strange. The knocking gets louder and louder. I look to see if the knocking is coming from the window, but it's not. I look around my room and see my vintage mirror screwed to the wall, shaking to the beat of the knocking vibrations. I could feel my heart racing faster as the knocking got louder. But then it stops.
As I turn back around, I try to convince myself that it's all in my head and I'm imagining it. I drift off to sleep but before I do, I hear a quiet and raspy yet very clear voice say, "Not yet, maybe tomorrow." Again, I convince myself that it's all in my head and maybe it's just a dream. I drift off to sleep once again trying not to think too much about what just happened.
Beep beep beep. The alarm woke me up at 6:30 am. I stay in bed for a few minutes, not feeling like waking up. I finally get out of bed and go to get breakfast. I finish getting ready and head out to catch the bus.
School is over and I head back home. I get some snacks from the kitchen and go to my room to do my homework. I grab my computer and lay on my bed. I have very thick curtains over my window so my room gets dark. My sister stays after school to help out with ASB so she doesn't come home for another hour. My younger brothers have sports after school so they stay a little longer too. I have the whole house to myself for about an hour.
I start my homework and while I'm going through my assignments, I look over at the mirror and notice that my mirror has fingerprints on it. I take a closer look at it and I see a lot of handprints smeared around the mirror. At first, I thought it was just my siblings, but then I remembered that no one was home all day and I didn't let anyone in my room. I keep it locked. I take a closer look and notice that my eyes never move. They stay looking at me. I thought it was just in my head so I ignored it.
I finally finished my homework. It took me 3 hours to finish the entire thing. I check to see what time it is. It is 1:46 am. "Ok, I have to sleep now. I don't want to be late tomorrow." As I lay down, I stare up at the ceiling again, not feeling tired.
I hear the knocking again, except this time it's louder. I look up to see hands leaving prints on my mirror. I then hear a raspy laugh come from the mirror. My heart races again. I want to move. I want to run out of the room, the house, but I can't, my body won't move. I then see myself getting out of bed and walking towards the mirror. I realize that I am moving but I don't know why or how. I am now standing face to face with myself in the mirror and notice a small smirk on my face. I stand there looking at myself and the smirk soon becomes a full-on smile. The face becomes wrinkled and the eyes turn black. The hand reached out to grab me and because of how scared I was, I didn't move. The hand grabs onto my arm and pulls me in. I forgot how to scream at that moment. As it pulls me in, everything goes dark.
I wake up in the morning on the floor, next to my mirror. I wake up and see myself in the mirror again. Moving on its own without me, getting ready for school. I then see my sister walk into my room like she owns the place and hug my reflection. My reflection hugs her back and they act like friends. They act like sisters. They are walking out of the room and my sister looks back at the mirror as if she knows I'm there and gives an evil smirk.
My reflection walks away and my sister stops and walks back to the mirror to talk to me. She looks straight into my face. "Do you like my little friend?"
"What did you do to me?"
"Let's just say, I made a deal with the devil." She walked away from me while I banged on the mirror and screamed her name as loud as I can. I was so furious with her, I didn't know what to do but to scream and cry.
This is my life now. I live on the other side of my mirror, with no way out and no one to talk to. But I watch my sister and my reflection every day, and she always gives me the same looks before she walks out of the room. I watched both of them get older and older. They both left home and were probably living on their own. My parents moved out after retirement sold everything in the house, including the mirror I am now stuck in. I have been to many different places over the years and hoped that one day, I might find a way out of here. It's been years since I got stuck here and have still not been able to escape. I have lost all hope of escaping from this isolated dimension and have accepted that I will be never be freed from this terrible place that I am now calling home.
