38.) Preludes of a War (Part 1 of 3)

Shinso wasn't getting any sleep. He's tried, but thoughts of Kivi keep him awake. He's worried. He's scared. He's helpless.

He looks completely drained. His eyes have sunken in and their color is completely dull. He's lost weight due to not eating.

He's been a wreck.

And now after a few weeks, his body has given up on him. He's finally sacked out.

But it's not a very good fulfilling sleep.

"About time you fell asleep Shinso..."

Shinso is in a completely sky blue colored room. No doors, no walls, just blue open space everywhere he looks. There's nobody around to call out his name either.

"Who?"

"Shinso."

Shinso turns around and takes a step back once he does. The creature in front of him, terrifying but familiar. "D-Do I know you?"

"I figured you wouldn't remember me, Kivi did only show me to you once."

"Kivi?"

"Let me introduce myself quickly as I don't have much time, I'm Esprit. I'm a demon. Or I guess I should say was a demon. I'm a ghost now." He sighs, rubbing his temples. "Long story that we don't have time for. I'm the demon spirit that would always follow Kivi around."

"Weird."

Esprit rolls his eyes. "You want to save Kivi, yes?"

"Obviously."

"Then listen because I won't be able to repeat myself. Let me start with..." He sighs. "Don't freak out or get angry with me, but Lunox... she's the love of my life."

"What!?"

"Just listen. Lunox is like me. A demon spirit. Hard to explain but basically we're like grim reapers. When demons die we either become spirits or reincarnated. The ones chosen to be spirits are tasked with taking humans to the afterlife instead of them walking the world invisibly as ghosts. The other kind of demons' spirits are too violent or brainless to be reincarnated. Those are mainly the giant creatures that roam that you can't see."

"So you're saying you're one of the ones tasked with taking humans to the afterlife."

"Yes, heaven or hell or whatever. Not important. Lunox and I are. We were tasked with taking all the humans that All for One has killed to where they need to go. But... they didn't want to go until they saw him perish with them, so they could watch us take him to hell. Seeing all the millions of people made Lunox angry for them and at All for One."

"Wait, I thought Lunox was crazy."

"Well, she is now. When All for One got the power to see ghosts, he immediately started to get attacked by all the humans he killed. So he gave the power to Kivi."

"I know that."

"Yes, but during the transfer Lunox wanted to help Kivi defeat him. So she combined herself with Kivi to lend her the will to kill him. But something happened when All for One forced the ghost quirk on Kivi. The anger of Lunox and Kivi made Lunox go insane to what she is now."

Shinso didn't know how to feel. Angry? Sad? He doesn't even know who he should feel for. "Why are you telling me this? How are you telling me this? Where even are we?" He looks around at the endless blue colored space they're in again.

"I'm telling you this because I need your help. You and I are the only ones that are going to get through to Kivi and in turn Lunox. We're in your mind in your dreams. I had to overshadow your dreams. It was the only way I could talk to you."

"How are we going to save them?"

"I'm going to lend you my power. If we can get her to let her guard down for just a moment and get you to brainwash her then we can save them."

"Fine. How?"

Esprit grins which made a shiver run down Shinso's back. "You'll know when you wake. You won't see me, but I'll be beside you." He starts to disappear.

"Wait! I don't get what you mean!"

"You will..."

"Shinso!! Shinso!!!" a loud banging comes from the door to his room. "Shinso!! Wake up!"

Shinso groans, rolling himself off his bed and to the door. "...What?"

One of his classmates stands on the other side. "Aizawa sensei is here. He needs to talk to you. Says it's really important."

The 'dream' he just had returns full force through his mind. He looks back into his room as if he'll see Esprit. He doesn't, but he knows he's there. He looks back to his classmate. "Yeah, I'll be right there."

Shinso meets with Aizawa in the teacher's room of the 1A dorms.

"Did Esprit talk to you?" Aizawa asks, taking a sip from his coffee as he sits on his couch beside the teen.

"How'd you know about him?" Shinso asks shocked.

"He came to me last night," Aizawa explains. "Said he only had enough strength to chat with you before he'd need rest. So we both know about Lunox now. I've already explained to the other pro heroes about it this morning. We're also granting you a temporary provisional license for the battle. Kivi seems to think that you're going to be a vital part to win."

"Kivi?"

"Bakugo had a run in with her a few days ago and gave him a coded message that an attack will be soon. She and Hawks have made a plan with the rest of the hero association."

"Is that why she hasn't taken them out and left?"

"No, she was stuck there because they put a bomb in her brother. She's gotten it out though."

"How do you know all this?"

"Esprit has been with her this whole time," Aizawa explains. "This is only between us. Don't tell anyone else." He sighs as Shinso nods. "We're planning an attack on the League of Villains. The hero course will be told it's a trip."

"Wait, they're going with?!"

"We need all the help we can get..." Aizawa says. "This is going to be a big battle. With Shigaraki and Lunox, it's gonna be almost impossible." He sighs. "I don't doubt that there will be deaths..."

"So... You're leading us to our deaths?"

"No. No, the students are there to help evacuate and nothing else. They're going to be protected as much as who they're evacuating," Aizawa explains.

"But, I'm going to be in the heat of it?"

"Esprit believes that you're going to be the only one able to stop Lunox," Aizawa explains. "Are you up to doing that?"

"I will do anything to get Kivi back."

Aizawa nods. "Then you'll be with me. Esprit will follow you."

"And you?"

Aizawa grins. "Turns out I have some helpful ghosts of my own."
