School sucks. Charlotte thought. She didn't say it out loud, though. Her friends all loved school, even though they were made fun of every single day. Her name was Charlotte, yes, but everyone called her Charlie. Penny was the weirdest one of all, she had purple hair and red eyes. Jackson thought she was part demon, and Penny shrugged it off. Delilah always carried around a stuffed rabbit, because she had serious anger issues. Every time the teachers took her rabbit away, she yelled, screamed, and kicked stuff till the teachers gave it back. Now everyone knew not to mess with Delilah's toy. Everyone else was very social, all except John. He was like the goth guy of the group. There were times when he spoke, but not often.
"How's your day going?"
Jackson's voice startled Charlie, her hand slipping of the edge of the fence where she leaned. Charlie caught herself with only one foot holding her in place, the other dangling horizontally in the air. It took her a minute to realize Jackson was waiting for her to answer.
"Good." Charlie replied after a minute, "I think."
"What do you mean 'I think'?" Delilah asked her, the rabbit dangling from her left hand.
"The day just started." Charlie replied.
Penny groaned while looking at her phone.
"What bothers the demon?" Jackson mused, looking at her.
Penny shot him a glare and thumped his head. She showed the rest of them her phone. She had gotten a text from Quinn, her boyfriend, saying that there would be a pop quiz.
"Oh god in math!? I'm gonna fail for sure!" Delilah whined.
"He also spelled math wrong.. Quinn spelled it "msth"." Jackson pointed out. The rest of them burst into giggles.
"It's just a typo!" Peny said, turning her hand around to face back to her, "It's not like he's stupid or something."
The bell rung, making everyone rush into school before the late bell rung. Charlie was ahead of them all, skidding across the white wood floors. She reached first period, then knocked on the door frantically. A classmate opened the door slowly, letting her in. The rest of the group followed shortly after, and right as the last person, Delilah, walked in, the late bell rung.
Phew. Charlie thought, None of us are late.
The teacher started the lesson about the solar systems and planets and all that. Once she got halfway through the lesson, everyone was already asleep. Charlie shrugged and laid down on her desk, but right as she felt the grace of sleep touch her the teacher said, "Alright go to second period." Everyone suddenly woke up and scrambled toward the door, trampling eachother. After everyone cleared out, she noticed Jackson on the floor. "What's wrong?" Charlie asked him. "SOMEONE STEPPED ON MY A$$!" He shouted at her. Charlie rolled her eyes and stepped over him.
In second period, they learned how to write "correctly" but Charlie was asleep for most of it. Third period was math, and she dreaded the evil pop quiz. Soon enough, the teacher announced that they were having a pop quiz. Everyone groaned, and it wasn't like Charlie could copy off Penny's test answers, because she wasn't in third period, she had math as second period. Suddenly Charlie's phone beeped. It was Penny! She sent Charlie that answers! After the test was handed out, she just wrote down what Penny had texted her. She was the first person to hand in the test. After it was all over, Charlie realized she was the only person to get a 100%.
After School...
It was so boring after school. It was boring in school, before school, and after school. But this time, it wasn't as boring, Jackson's aunt wasn't there to pick him up, so he had to take the bus with Charlie. Charlie wasn't sure what she felt about him, sometimes he's funny, or loveable, and sometimes he's so stupid. Did she like him? No, probably not. Or maybe..
She was so caught up in her feelings and thoughts, she didn't notice Jackson talking to her.
"Charlie. Charlie. Charlie." He kept saying, "CHARLIE!"
"Oh sorry Jackson! Just caught up with my thoughts." She said, "What do you need?"
He rolled his eyes and started to speak, but Charlie realized it was her stop.
"Sorry! Gotta go! Talk to you tomorrow!" She scooped up her backpack from the seat and stumbled off the bus. Charlie ran home, her hair flowing backwards behind her. She closed her eyes and stuck her hands out, finally free of the prison of school. Charlie accidentally ran into someone, and got up quickly, eyes still not opened.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry!" She opened her eyes to see a handsome man, with short red hair and bright blue eyes.
She noticed his WHITE SHIRT was stained with coffee, and instead of saying sorry again, she wondered why someone was drinking coffee this late.
"..This is my favorite shirt.." the man said, still holding the empty coffee cup.
"Sorry I was just-" Charlie started, but was shushed.
"Don't. Just don't. Buy me a new shirt, then I'll forgive you." He dropped the cup, it shattering on the stone path. He wiped his shirt with his gloved hands, then pushed past her, making her fall back with the unsoftness of the push. She steadied herself, then looked back at the man.
What a jerk. Charlie thought. She picked up one of the cup shards, wondering why he dropped it. Then she flung the shard behind her and continued on her path.
After Charlie reached her house, she unlocked and flung the door open. She left the door open and raced to the backyard, unlocking the gate that went into the forest. She ran through a dirt path until she reached a small barn. She picked an apple from a nearby tree then unlocked the barn with her key. She kneeled down and fed the apple to a horse. She had kept this horse after she found it as a baby on the street. Charlie had named it Rye after finding out it was a boy. Charlie slowly led Rye outside with his lead, and after he was fully out of the barn, Charlie hopped on his saddle and rode him into the forest.
A few hours later, Charlie returned from her ride with Rye and closed him in the barn, giving him three apples. As she walked back to her house, she realized a fancy car was in the driveway. Charlie didn't own any car, so she decided to check it out. After she walked in the front room, she noticed three men standing there. One of which was the man she spilled coffee on.
"You spilled my son's coffee?" The older man asked, glaring at her. The third man was like a bodyguard, and he wore sunglasses.
"It was an accident." Charlie responded. After she said that, she realized who the older man was. He was the richest man in the town, Mr. Bullock. However, he looked like a mafia boss.
Crap! Did she say that out loud!?
"Mafia boss..?" Mr. Bullock stared down at Charlie, "How.. did you know?"
OH MY GOD! MR. BULLOCK WAS THE MAFIA BOSS!?
Charlie calmed her thoughts down, and finally spoke. But her words sounded a little too harsh.
"Excuse me, Mr. Bullock, this ain't "Sold to the Mafia Boss", so please leave my house." Charlie said to him.
Mr. Bullock glared at her, and signaled his bodyguard to grab her. Charlie was no expert, but she thought it was time to run. She spun around and back-kicked the bodyguard, and then ran through the back gate, which she left open.
Charlie ran through the forest, glancing back to see the trio chasing her. It was hard to believe that she got here by spilling coffee!
Charlie whipped out her key and quickly unlocked the barn, riding Rye through Mr. Bullock and his son and bodyguard, jumping over the fence. Now, you might think it's weird to see a horse in the middle of the road, but if you do, just know that it was Charlie.
After that whole fiasco, Charlie invited her group of friends to have a sleepover at her house. Jackson said he would pick everyone up, and, sure enough, his car pulled in the driveway. Rye was safely tucked away in his barn with a bushel of apples to chomp on, so no worries there. Mr. Bullock had lost track of Charlie and Rye after a couple minutes, so that was no problem either.
After everyone was greeted and everyone's sleeping bag was set up, Penny pulled out a secret from her bag. An Ouija Board!?
"Really, Penny?" Jackson asked.
"Yes, really." There was that Penny smirk. That know-it-all smirk. Charlie didn't know anyone who didn't hate that smirk.
After setting the board up, Penny picked Charlie to summon a spirit with her. Everyone else left the room while they did the game.
Penny closed her eyes and said, "Are you here?"
Nothing.
"Welp, that's a wrap, let's just go get the others and-" Charlie started.
YES
Penny's smile was as wide as a cloud. "What is your name?" She asked.
WHAT IS YOURS
Penny replied with her name and Charlie with hers. Penny gestured for Charlie to ask.
"What is your name?"
SAMA
"Where are you?"
THE SPIRIT REALM
"How did you die?"
HUMANS KILLED ME
"Can we see you?"
IN THE MORNING
"Are you going to leave?"
GOODBYE
All the questions they asked after that there was no answer to. Charlie was freaked out by the while thing, and Penny was just glad it worked. Though they were both wondering how they would see 'Sama' in the morning.
Penny yawned, and everyone else came in.
They all got in their sleeping bags and Charlie put away the Ouija Board. She got in her bag and stared at Penny's bag, where she put the Ouija Board. It was just a game. Charlie thought. But for some reason, even she didn't believe it.In The Morning
They all woke up at a school. It wasn't their school, it looked broken down and abandoned. Is this what Sama meant by meeting? Charlie woke up first, then she woke up everyone else. They all followed the wall of the school to the back door, then they walked into a locker room with red footsteps on the floor. Charlie told them that they should try following the footsteps. They went into a gym and then a pool, and there was a shed with a glowing red light on the side of the pool. They followed the steps and got to the shed. There was a key that Charlie picked up, and unlocked a door on the other side of the gym.
"Isn't anyone gonna question where we are?" Delilah dragged her rabbit along with the rest of the group.
"Sama brought us here." Penny responded, and smirked at Delilah.
Charlie yelled at them to shut up, and they went into the back of the school, where there was a bright pink sakura tree. They went into a bathroom, where there was nothing, then they went into another hall where they found a key to unlock the basement door. Charlie went first and said it was all clear, then John dropped down, then Penny, and Delilah and Jackson fought for who should go.
"I don't wanna go!! My rabbit will get wet!!" Delilah said to Jackson, shoving her rabbit into his face. Jackson snatched the toy and threw it down ito the sewer. A split second after he threw it, Delilah leaped after it, encasing it in her arms.
Jackson was the last one to climb down into the sewers.
"Why'd you do that, Jackson." Penny said, without a hint of a smile on her face.
"Because I wanted to." He answered.
"Ugh, let's just go." Charlie said, continuing on.
There was a glowing red door at the end of the tunnel, and everyone said Jackson should be the one to open it. He slowly reached out and grabbed the door handle. He waited a minute to open it, then flung it open and ran back 5 feet. This time, Delilah went first. Behind the door was a little Japanese town, and it was raining softly. Gentle humming filled the air, and Delilah hummed along with its tune.
"This is the song mom used to hum to me when I was little." She said. Delilah grabbed Charlie's hand and dragged her through the path of stone. After letting go of Charlie's hand, Delilah danced in the rain. Everyone smiled and danced with her, all except John. He stood there in the corner, black hair getting soaked by the rain. Charlie stopped dancing and grabbed all their hands.
"Focus." She said. We have to get back.
Everyone stopped dancing and continued along the path, following Charlie. There was a bridge, and a house on the other side. They crossed the bridge, and went through the pink veil of silk to the house. They went inside and opened a white door. There were two paths to take, one right and one left. There was a note that read, "find the key to the hidden door" on it, so that's what they set out to do. Jackson led them, but Charlie noticed something move up ahead when they were in the maze.
"Guys, did you see that?" She asked them, but they were nowhere to be found. So, Charlie went towards the thing. She looked around. Nothing was there. Charlie shrugged and flipped around. There was a tall lady with a white dress and pink hat there. It was looking down on her like it was about to kill her.
And the best Charlie could think to do.. was run.
