No one lives forever, except me of course. Many people see it as a dream. Being able to exist endlessly and do whatever you want for eternity, but it's actually quite boring. You never get to really make any permanent connections with people. You get close to them and eventually you watch them age while you stay the same and eventually they die. It's been a quite lonely 2,000 years but that was until I met him. Snailous Shellington was someone I never imagined I'd meet again after all these years. You see it all started one day 2,000 years ago...
It was the first day in a while that it hadn't been raining. I was sitting in the grass when I caught something moving out of the corner of my eye. I looked over and saw a snail crawling towards a leaf. I smiled, I picked him up and held him for a minute or two. "May, you must eat your soup!" My mother yelled, "Ok!" I called back, setting the snail back on the ground.
Years had passed now and I would always get compliments on how young I looked. They said I still looked 20 even though I was in my late 30s. I didn't think much of it at the time, then it got worse.
Now I was 50, except I still looked 20. Something was definitely wrong. But I had no idea what. That's when I heard the tale of a snail that would grant you eternal life if you touched him, he would also take back this gift if you touched him a second time. He had been cursed to remain a snail until he found someone who would touch him and live forever. Then he would turn back to human form.
Now it's 2021 and standing in front of me is that same snail, but human again. After all my years searching for him, I ended up falling for him. I ran up to him, completely forgetting the biggest rule of living forever, and cupped my hands around his face and kissed him. Then, we pulled apart and I saw tears streaming down his face. I looked him in the eyes and that's when it hit me, I was about to die. And then I was gone.
