Chapter 3: The Giant Man

BOOM

Dudley suddenly sat up and said "Where's the cannon?" Rose rolled her eyes at her brother stupidly.

Uncle Vernon ran into the room with Aunt Petunia and Gabby's mouth opened in horror and Rose look at her father shocked.

'He brought a rifle?' Gabby and Rose thought furiously. There are kids around!

"Who's there?" Uncle Vernon called confidently. "I warn you-I'm armed!"

There was one last crash and the door flew off its hinges. Gabby and Esme instinctively took a step back and Harry hugged them in comfort.

"Whoa..." Esme murmured to her brother, sister, and Rose. A giant man stood in the doorway, taller than any person she'd ever seen. He had a wild mane of hair and a bushy beard. His eyes looked like black beetles and you could just see them in among the hair. He squeezed into the hut and he bent so low that his head scraped the ceiling. He picked up the door and put it back easily on the frame. The triplets' mouths were open.

"Couldn' make us a cup o' tea, could yeh? It's not been an easy journey..."

He strode over to Dudley on the couch and said "Budge up, yeh great lump!" Dudley squeaked and ran to hide behind his mum, who was hiding behind her husband. Esme smiled slightly but her mouth was still open in shock, her sister and Rose were laughing, both her parents and brother glared at her (mostly her father and brother).

"An' here are Harry, Gabby, and Esme!" the giant said.

The triplets looked up into his eyes and saw that they were crinkled in a smile.

"Las' time I saw you two, you were only babies!" said the giant. "Yeh look a lot like yer dad, Harry, but yeh've got yer mum's eyes." He turned to Sophie.

"Bu' yeh look two more like yer mum, Gabby, Esme only wi' darker hair!" Uncle Vernon made a weird rasping noise.

"I demand that you leave at once, sir! You are breaking and entering!" Gabby smirked, while Harry and Esme looked like they was still in a bit of shock and Rose is laughing at her father stupidness, that the giant man will listen to him. She don't even listen to him or Dudley at times, but her mother.

"Ah, shut up, Dursley, yeh great prune!" the giant said, snatching Uncle Vernon's rifle and twisting the end. He threw it into a corner, Gabby and Esme's confidence wavered a little. Uncle Vernon made a sound like a mouse being stepped on.

"Anyway, a very happy birthday to yeh three. Got summat fer yeh here-I mighta sat on it at some point but it'll taste all right."

He pulled a box out of a pocket in his overcoat and handed it to Harry, Gabby and Esme, who opened it. Inside was a chocolate cake with the words Happy Birthday Harry Gabby and Esme written on it with green icing.

They looked up at the giant. Both Gabby and Esme tried to remember how to speak, while Harry's thank you was lost on the way to his mouth and he instead said "Who are you?" Rose smiled happily at her cousins becaue they finlly have a real birthday cake someone esle said 'happy birthay to them' but her she always let sure she give them a birthay cupcake and a prasent for each of them.

"True, I haven't introduced myself," the giant chuckled. "Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts." He held out his hands and shook their arms.

"What about that tea then, eh? I'd not say no to summat stronger if yeh've got it, mind." He looked at the empty grate and snorted in amusement. He bent over the fireplace and a moment later a bright fire was there. Harry felt as if he'd sunk into a hot bath.

The giant sat down on the sofa, Gabby and Esme was wondering why it hadn't collapsed yet. But then, they reasoned, it had been able to take her cousin; Dudley's weight. He started to take all sorts of things out of his pockets: a kettle, a pack of sausages, a poker, a teapot, some mugs that didn't look as if they were new and a bottle of amber liquid which he had a drink from before cooking.
