[40's]
You were absolutely ecstatic for Bucky and Steve to come back from the war.
You had written them every second you got the chance and they had written back. The pair had been your best friends since you could remember and you loved them dearly.
Steve was always a goodie two shoes and Bucky had always been a lady's man, which sucked for you since you had a major crush on him.
How couldn't you? He was absolutely amazing.
But you were sure that he didn't feel the same way. He was him and you were you. You hadn't had anyone actually interested in you since you were 8.
Besides, why risk your friendship because of some silly feelings?
~
You woke up early and got dressed in an outfit you had set aside just for today.
"I hope the guys like it" You mumble to yourself
You make your way out of the door, the biggest smile on your face. You had even put on extra makeup.
~
As the trains rolled up, you search for their faces. You spot those ocean blue eyes and call out their names.
"James! Steve!" You wave your hand up in the air.
Bucky's head snaps over in your direction. He taps Steves chest and points to you, reliving his wondering eyes. "There's my girl" He smiles, running to you.
He swoops you up into a powerful hug. "I missed you, doll"
Your heart basically flutters right out of your chest. "I missed you, too"
"Forget me then" Steve scoffs
Bucky sets you down and you go and hug your pouty friend.
"You got big"
"Glad you noticed" He laughs
"Hungry?" You ask, hooking your arms with theirs
"Starving" The pair answer
You all go to your favorite diner and they nearly order the entire menu.
They tell you a bunch of war stories while you all eat.
"I was so lonely without you both here"
"No need to be lonely anymore" Bucky winks
I smile and look down at my plate.
"Oh! And you look beautiful today, Y/n" Your other friend adds
"Thank you, Steven"
~
"Buck, what happens to that girl you were writing?"
"What? Oh, it didn't work out"
Bucky noticed Y/n looking down at the ground.
"Really? You kept telling me that you liked her"
"It doesn't matter"
"What was her name? Dottie, was it?"
"Steve I said to fucking drop it!"
"I'm gonna go to the ladies room" You announced
You smooth out your dress and make your way away from the table.
"Why would you say that?" Bucky fussed
"Is it not true?"
"Of course it's not true!"
"Really? I vividly remember you going on and on about some girl named Dottie"
"Dottie isn't a real person. It's a code name for someone"
"For who?"
"For the woman, I'm in love with, genius"
"Oh, how did you two split?"
"We never spilt cause she doesn't know I like here"
"The letters?"
"If they were addressed to Dottie, I never sent them. Just wrote them"
"So who's the mystery lady?"
"Exactly that. A mystery"
Y/n comes back and sits down. "Sorry guys"
"It's fine" Bucky smiled
"Ready to go?"
The two guys nod, pay and we all leave.
~
"This is me!" Steve called
"See you tomorrow?"
"Of course" He smiled, giving you a big hug
You and Bucky keep walking. "Sorry about the diner thing"
"Why should you be sorry?"
"I don't know" He shrugs. "You know, when I almost died I realized that your entire life can change in the blink of an eye"
"Yeah?"
"And why waste a good thing because I'm scared?"
"Alright..?"
"Dottie isn't real. It's a code name"
"For who?"
"For the woman, I'm in love with"
"Oh..." You mumbled
"That woman is you, doll"
Your heart practically stops beating. "Me!?"
"Yep"
"How!?"
"You're you that's how"
Your thoughts spun so fast in your head, you didn't even notice you had stopped walking.
"I assume you don't feel the same way?"
Instead of answering you wrap your arms around his neck.
"You assume wrong Sargent Barnes"
"So? You do like me?
"I have for a while"
"Nearly dying was so worth it" He smiled, carefully placing his lips on yours.
You kiss him back and he walks you home, hand in hand.
"Goodnight, doll" He smiles, kissing your cheek
"Do you...wanna spend the night?"
"I'd love to, sweetheart" He grinned
